The journalism minor program teaches students to research, write and communicate clearly across platforms, paired with an understanding of media law and ethics. It’s designed for students who want to bring journalism tools to the fields they’re already studying, such as a biology major covering medical research, or a political science major interested in reporting on elections.

The 18-credit minor is one of three new minors introduced this fall by the Newhouse School, along with an , plus a offered in conjunction with the Martin J. Whitman School of Management.

The journalism minor will expand opportunities for students to learn about writing, reporting and storytelling from the Newhouse School’s award-winning faculty and provide a critical understanding of the underlying legal and ethical principles that guide journalism, says Newhouse Dean Mark Lodato.

Required coursework includes news writing across different platforms, the business and ethics of journalism, and communications law, along with a choice between audio and digital news writing or reporting fundamentals. Students round out the minor with two elective courses in broadcast, digital, magazine or visual communications.

“The core skills practiced by journalists—accurate writing under deadline, researching and gathering facts and telling a compelling story—are so valuable they can help a graduate stand out in almost any field,” says Lodato.

The minor also offers flexibility through the University’s study-away centers in New York City and Washington, D.C., where elective credits can count toward the minor.
