From Oct. 18 to 23, the 2026-27 Remembrance Scholars and Lockerbie Fellows led the Syracuse University community—here in Syracuse and around the world—in activities to honor the 270 people who died in the Dec. 21, 1988, terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.
The victims included 35 students studying through the University’s Division of International Programs Abroad (now Syracuse Abroad) and 11 people on the ground in Lockerbie.
Activities throughout the week, including a candlelight vigil, sitting in solidarity on the Quad, a film screening, presentations, the Rose-Laying Ceremony and Remembrance Scholar Convocation, were aimed at looking back and acting forward.
While Remembrance Week has concluded, the Remembrance Scholars will continue their work through Act Forward projects that will culminate in the spring semester. The Lockerbie Fellows, 10 students from Lockerbie Academy, will continue to engage with the Remembrance Scholars and work to educate their local community about the tragedy.
