Keeping Endangered Whales Safe By Predicting Their Movements

A College of Arts and Sciences researcher is working to develop models to predict whale behavior and prevent ship collisions.

When colossal cargo vessels and whales navigate the same waters, their encounters can end in tragedy. In May 2024, aĚýĚýarrived at a New York City port with a 44-foot endangered sei whale draped across its bow—fatally struck during the voyage. Such collisions pose a catastrophic threat to endangered whale populations, including North Atlantic right whales and sei whales, which frequently feed near busy shipping lanes like those off the coasts of Massachusetts.

For massive cruise and cargo ships, changing course quickly isn’t an option. If a whale appears in their path, collisions are often unavoidable. That’s why predicting whale locations in advance is critical—allowing vessels to chart safer routes from the very beginning of their journey. This is where biologists from the College of Arts and Sciences come in.

Pinpointing when and where these collisions are most likely to occur is the focus of a research project led byĚý, a research assistant professor in the and member of professor Susan Parks’Ěý. The project is a collaboration with theĚý, the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, Stony Brook University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Cusano recently received grant funding from theĚýĚýandĚýĚýto lead a four-year study focused on two endangered whale species: the North Atlantic right whale—of which only about 372 individuals remain—and the sei whale, classified as depleted under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Both species share a risky feeding behavior that puts them in the path of maritime traffic: they hunt near the ocean’s surface, making them especially vulnerable to ship strikes.

Feeding Forecast

Traditional approaches to preventing ship strikes have relied on tracking whales in real time. Cusano is taking a fundamentally different approach by developing predictive models that anticipate where whales will go next. The research combines detailed studies of whale movement patterns, both at the surface and underwater, with advanced satellite imagery that can identify concentrations of zooplankton prey from space.

“We’re essentially creating a forecasting system for whale behavior,” Cusano says. By understanding the conditions that drive feeding behavior and mapping prey hotspots from satellite data, the models aim to provide early warning systems for areas where whales are likely to congregate.

“The technology represents a significant advancement in marine conservation,” Cusano says. “Current methods often involve detecting whales after they’ve already arrived in shipping lanes, leaving little time for vessels to adjust their routes.”

The new predictive approach could provide hours or even days of advance notice, giving mariners sufficient time to implement safety measures.

The research will focus specifically on Massachusetts Bay and the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, areas known for both heavy shipping traffic and important whale feeding grounds. These waters serve as a natural laboratory where researchers can study the complex interactions between whale behavior, prey availability and shipping patterns.

The project’s immediate applications could transform maritime safety protocols. When models predict high probability feeding areas, shipping companies could receive automated alerts recommending reduced speeds or alternate routes. Slower vessel speeds significantly reduce the likelihood of strikes, the severity of injuries and damage to the vessel when collisions do occur.

Conservation at a Critical Moment

The timing of this research proves particularly crucial for North Atlantic right whales. Recent population assessments suggest the species may be experiencing a reproductive crisis, with fewer calves born each year and increased mortality from human activities. Every individual whale lost to ship strikes represents a significant blow to the species’ survival prospects.

The sei whale faces different but equally serious challenges. As one of the least studied large whale species, basic information about their behavior, population size and habitat requirements remains limited. They also experienceĚý at rates higher than expected. This research will contribute essential data about sei whale ecology while developing tools to protect them from collisions with ships.

Cusano’s approach reflects a new generation of conservation science that combines traditional biological research with cutting-edge technology. The integration of satellite remote sensing, behavioral ecology and predictive modeling represents the kind of interdisciplinary collaboration necessary to address complex environmental challenges.

Building Conservation Strategies

The project’s success could establish a model for protecting marine mammals in high-traffic areas worldwide. Shipping lanes intersect with critical habitat for numerous whale species across the globe, from blue whales off California to humpback whales in Australian waters.

The research will also contribute to training the next generation of marine conservation scientists at the University. Graduate students and early-career researchers working on the project will gain experience with advanced analytical techniques and collaborative approaches that define modern conservation biology.

The over $2 million investment represents more than funding for a single research project—it’s an investment in developing the scientific tools necessary to safeguard marine mammals in an increasingly crowded ocean.

“For whales hovering on the edge of extinction, this research represents an important opportunity to develop effective protection strategies,” says Cusano. “As global shipping traffic increases, the need for proactive conservation measures becomes ever more urgent.”

Most University offices closed or on reduced hours during holiday break; essential services remain fully operational.

In continuation of the University’s commitment to providing comprehensive benefits and in appreciation of the contributions of faculty and staff, the University will operate under its holiday schedule and Orange Appreciation Days format for the winter break period from 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2025, through Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026. Normal business hours will resume on Monday, Jan. 5, 2026.

In addition to the regular University holidays of Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 and bonus days Dec. 26 and 31, the following days have been designated as paid Orange Appreciation Days: Dec. 29 and 30 and Jan. 2.

Units providing essential services that will remain fully operational during the Winter Break include the Department of Public Safety and Facilities Services.

Services During Orange Appreciation Days/Winter Break

Admissions and Enrollment Processing

The office will be closed for the holidays and Orange Appreciation Days and will reopen on Monday, Jan. 5, 2025, at 8:30 a.m.

Advancement and External Affairs

Advancement Services staff will maintain business hours at the 640 Skytop Office Building Dec. 29, 30 and 31, 2025, to receive and process fundraising gifts.

Building Occupancy

During the Holiday/Orange Appreciation Days period:

Request for Building Access (locking):
If you require your building to be open over the holidays/Orange Appreciation Days period, please submit a request to your building coordinator, noting the specific dates and times. Requests should be made by 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12. (Note that faculty and staff will be able to access the buildings you work in, as usual, by using their SU I.D. cards, even when the buildings are locked.)

Building temperatures will be lowered to 60 degrees unless prior arrangements have been made.

Deans, directors and department heads may submit a detailed request for adjustments to temperature and lighting during the holidays/Orange Appreciation Days period. Please review the University’s temperature guidelines. We ask that requests be made using the Maximo Maintenance system by 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12. The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science professor will address metacognitive artificial intelligence at the Singapore conference in January 2026.

KG TanĚýEndowed Professor of Artificial Intelligence Paulo Shakarian was as one of 10 speakers to address emerging trends at theĚý in Singapore from Jan. 20-27, 2026. AAAI is the premier scientific society dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI), advancing the scientific understanding of the mechanisms underlying behavior and their embodiment in machines.

The emerging trends in AI track at the AAAI conference aims to expose the AI community to exciting, under recognized or fast-developing ideas from the various AI subdisciplines, as well as from adjacent disciplines and domains. Talks will summarize new developments and competitions that are likely to shape future AI research agendas.

Shakarian will be discussing metacognitive artificial intelligence and a recent paper titled “Towards Artificial Metacognition.” Metacognitive AI deals with the study of artificial intelligence systems that can self-monitor and/or regulate resources.Ěý The concept has its roots in cognitive psychology studies on human metacognition.Ěý It has led to the understanding of how people monitor, control and communicate their cognitive processes.

“It is an honor to have been selected to present an emerging trend talk at AAAI,” Shakarian says. “I am really grateful to the community of researchers that have coalesced around artificial metacognition over the past two years.Ěý An exciting community has formed consisting of not only computer scientists, but from diverse disciplines including cognitive psychology, systems engineering and aerospace, among others. Developing artificial systems that reason about themselves is, in my view, a key challenge that we must address in order to deliver AI systems that are more resilient and robust.”

Shakarian has written numerous papers on metacognitive AI and has also edited a book on the topic.Ěý He has received several grant awards on the topic from the Army and DARPA, and most recently he has received funding for several high-end Nvidia-based GPU systems that will soon arrive at Syracuse.

Shakarian has also sought to create a , holding several workshops on the topic since 2023.

“Paulo’s innovative work in metacognitive and neuro-symbolic AI represents the next wave of AI research,” Alex Jones, chair of , says. “His recognition by AAAI signifies both his leadership in the field and Syracuse University’s growing role at the forefront of artificial intelligence.”

Maxwell School Honors Alumnus Elliot Stamler ’60 With Cramer Horizon Award

The latest recipient of the Cramer Horizon Award has embodied the ideals of its namesakes, Gerald ’52, H’10 and Daphna Cramer, through his professional endeavors, philanthropy and commitment to engaged citizenship.

Throughout his remarkable career, honoree Elliot J. Stamler ’60, who received a bachelor’s degree in political science, held executive roles in advertising and publicity, real estate brokerage and asset management. He has generously supported Maxwell and Syracuse University with his time, expertise and financial contributions. In 2019, he named the University as a beneficiary of a portion of his estate—totaling seven figures—to be directed to multiple recipients on campus to support academic and research excellence.

The Cramer Horizon Award recognizes alumni and friends for their wise, inspirational leadership and exceptional philanthropic commitment. Originally the Horizon Award, it was renamed in 2018 to honor the Cramers, who are among the most generous and influential supporters in Maxwell history.Ěý, a graduate of the , gifted Maxwell nearly $10 million over three decades; his philanthropy was often driven by his interest in a world problem or policy issue.

“Today’s ceremony marks the first time Maxwell has bestowed this recognition since 2011,” Liz Armstrong G’13, Maxwell’s assistant dean for advancement, said at a special ceremony honoring Stamler in May. “We hoped to have this ceremony in 2022, the year Elliot was named the recipient, but more than anything, we are so pleased to do so years later and amongst his fellow classmates.”

After earning an undergraduate degree at Maxwell and the College of Arts and Sciences in 1960, Stamler attended Columbia University, graduating with an MBA in 1965. “Maxwell, through its students and alumni, is a potent, positive force now and in the future for the preservation of our democracy,” Stamler said in a previous interview when explaining his motivation for supporting the Maxwell School.

Stamler resides in New York City and is retired from running his own investment company, Northstar Assets. His career also included executive roles with Columbia Pictures Television/Screen Gems Inc. and First Hanover Realty.

Maxwell Dean David M. Van Slyke came to know Stamler soon after becoming dean in 2016 but noted that his commitment to and support of Maxwell began long before his time. Over the years, Stamler “has challenged us to examine present-day Maxwell and envision our future,” Van Slyke said.

“Much like we hope for every graduate, Elliot’s political science degree has influenced all aspects of his life and his way of thinking. He is a lifelong learner with a strong commitment to democracy and citizenship,” Van Slyke said.

'Never Take No for an Answer': Phyllis E. Greenberger ’64 Transformed the Landscape of Women's Health Research

When Phyllis E. Greenberger ’64 walked the campus of Syracuse University as a student, she could never have imagined that nearly three decades later, she would be in the Oval Office, advocating for women’s health with United States President Bill Clinton. After graduating from SU, her career led her from social work to federal lobbyist. Greenberger eventually became a leading voice for women’s health while serving as President and CEO of theĚýĚý(SWHR).

Greenberger credits her time on the SU Hill for her success on Capitol Hill. Armed with her liberal arts education, which honed her critical thinking, adaptability and cultural awareness, she developed a “never take no for an answer” attitude that would ultimately transform the landscape of women’s health research.

During her time leading SWHR, Greenberger continually fought for equal attention to women in healthcare. This was necessary because, before SWHR was founded in 1990, medical research predominantly focused on men, resulting in significant gaps in understanding how illnesses manifest in women as compared to men. Thanks to her passionate and steadfast advocacy, Greenberger and others with SWHR helped pass legislation that advanced patient-specific treatment with an emphasis on addressing sex differences, ensuring that both men and women benefit equally from scientific advancements.

Shining the light on women’s health is a fight that Greenberger helped to start, but a fight she says is far from over. According to a recent report from theĚý, the cancer incidence rate for women younger than 50 has increased from 51% higher than men in 2002 to 82% higher in 2021. Additionally, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and autoimmune disorders including lupus, celiac disease, thyroid disease, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and multiple sclerosis continue to occur more commonly in women than in men, as reported byĚý. Greenberger stresses the need for researchers and advocates to persist in integrating sex differences into medical and pharmaceutical studies, as this will lead to better health outcomes for all.

We recently sat down with Greenberger to learn more about her Syracuse experience, her role as a champion of women’s health and her views on the current state of women’s health.

Take us back to your time at Syracuse. Why did you choose SU and what do you remember most fondly from your time as a student?

Being a native of Brooklyn, I fell in love with the Central New York region while taking summer courses at Cornell University as a high school student. Those experiences motivated me to apply to Syracuse University.

I really enjoyed my time at Syracuse. I was in a sorority, Sigma Delta Tau, and I still have many friends that I keep in touch with. One of my most memorable experiences, though, was my time abroad in Florence. Having the opportunity to study abroad was very unusual at that time, and it was very transformative.

What did you enjoy about studying abroad?

Living with two separate Italian families was an incredibly enlightening experience and allowed me to become fluent in Italian. Immersing yourself in a new culture broadens your perspective and I highly recommend that students study abroad if they have the opportunity.

How would you describe the significance of a liberal arts education, study abroad programs and experiential learning opportunities?

Having an academically and experientially diverse education is critically important. It’s unfortunate that many universities are focusing too much on technology, with students attending college solely to secure a specific job upon graduation.

While employment is essential, we should also understand history, read literature and develop strong writing skills. With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), the world is changing rapidly. Students need to explore various classes and experiences to discover what truly interests and excites them.

Shifting to your career as a women’s health advocate, what inspired you to become involved in that field?

While interning with the American Psychiatric Association, I met several female psychiatrists who were concerned that women weren’t included in clinical trials, even though women suffered more from depression and anxiety than men.

That internship led to your job with the APA, where you served asĚýAssistant Director of Government RelationsĚýand Director of the Political Action Committee. After that role, how did you transition to the Society for Women’s Health Research?

While with the APA, I met an OBGYN by the name of Florence Haseltine, who was founding the society. I suggested that in addition to having researchers and scientists on the board, the society also needed someone that knows Washington. With the APA I ran their Political Action Committee, so I knew many women members in Congress and my husband was in the media, so I knew the journalists, so they asked me to be on the volunteer board.

Can you explain your role in advancing women’s health advocacy at the presidential level?

Phyllis

In the early 1990s, while I was with the APA, I began working with the staff of (former second lady) Tipper Gore, who was interested in mental health issues. Later, a friend asked me to organize a group of women for an event during President Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign, where Hillary Clinton was speaking. After the event, I suggested to Hillary, ‘If you’re going to be speaking to women across the country, you might want to talk about women’s health.’

When I arrived at my office the following day, Hillary had left a message asking me to join their campaign as an advocate for women’s health. During Bill’s acceptance speech the following January, he made a reference to women’s health. After the speech, Hillary came over to me and said, ‘that was because of you,’ so that was really nice. That was sort of where it all started.

How did your experience as a lobbyist with the Clinton campaign lead to your leadership role with the Society for Women’s Health Research?

After Bill Clinton talked about women’s health in his inauguration speech, I went back to the board of the society the next meeting, and I said, ‘Now that the President is talking about women’s health, I think we have to become a real organization, not just volunteer.’ They spent six months looking for a CEO. During that time, I thought I might want to work for the Clintons in the White House, but then I decided it would be more fun and interesting to help start an organization. I put my resume in, and I ended up being selected to head the society.

Can you talk about some of the issues women faced from a healthcare standpoint when you started with the Society for Women’s Health Research?

In the early 1990s, medical devices such as pacemakers, joint replacements and stents were designed based on male anatomy, ignoring the differences between men’s and women’s bodies. Now we know medications and devices work differently for each gender. However, issues like undiagnosed cardiovascular conditions persist because some physicians lack familiarity with the different symptoms, so the fight for women’s health rights isn’t over yet.

How have you seen the scope of women’s health organizations change during your career?

When I started with the society, we were the only organization dedicated to women’s health. Now, there are several. I also played a role in convincing the American Heart Association to recognize that women have heart attacks, which they hadn’t considered before due to the lack of women in clinical trials. Similarly, the National Osteoporosis Foundation was initially focused on men. Thankfully, a lot has changed for the better.


width=267Greenberger’s book,Ěý, chronicles the fight to overcome bias and discrimination in women’s healthcare. It emphasizes the ways in which biological sex significantly impacts both health and the quality of healthcare received. Although conditions like heart and autoimmune diseases, migraines and others manifest differently in individuals with XX chromosomes, Greenberger argues that many patients do not receive the appropriate attention or care due to sex bias present in clinics, laboratories and clinical studies.

 


Your acclaimed book,ĚýSex Cells,Ěýoutlines the historical context of women’s health. What was the motivation to write it and bring this story to the public?

I think it’s important for people to understand the history of women’s health, not only because of the progress, but also because of the fact that we’re not there yet. The beginning of the book focuses on the history and the end is patient stories and quotes from researchers. The quotes from the researchers make it obvious that there’s still a lot of ignorance, a lot of denial and a lot of research that is not being taken into consideration. The patient stories bring attention to women who have been turned away because their symptoms are different, or they’re not taken seriously.

Can you provide an example?

Doctors often dismiss women’s complaints about pain. There are numerous stories of women experiencing indigestion, stomach pains, or chest pains, only to be ignored in hospitals and then later on discover that they were having a heart attack. The last part of the book is really a statement about how much ignorance and denial still exists.

How do you hope your book informs future healthcare professionals?

I hope medical students will read the book, especially those at universities where sex differences aren’t part of the curriculum. By doing so, they can advocate for their medical schools to include this important topic. The goal is to educate future doctors about sex differences and the various ways men and women differ. This knowledge will improve patient care, enhance treatment effectiveness and ensure that medical research is comprehensive and inclusive.

Throughout your career, you consistently challenged the status quo to advocate for others. What’s your secret to achieving success in this endeavor?

I’ve been asked so many times how I managed to do what I did. It really had to do with me having, as they say in Yiddish, “chutzpah.” I just never took no for an answer. When heads of major health organizations ignored what we were trying to do for women’s health advocacy, I just kept on going. Don’t take no for an answer. If you really feel strongly about something, then you need to really push it.

My advice to students: Hopefully you can find something that’s not just a job, but a vocation. Something that you really care about and that you can really pursue. If it’s something that you can do that is going to help individuals or help your community, that’s what’s important.

Syracuse University Maintains R1 Classification

Syracuse University has once again been classified as a “Research 1: Very High Spending and Doctorate Production” institution by the American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Part of the , the R1 designation goes to the top tier of doctoral research universities in the U.S. Syracuse is one of 187 institutions to hold the designation, which is based on a minimum annual research expenditure of $50 million and 70 or more research doctorates conferred per year.

The Carnegie Classifications, dating to 1973, are the industry standard for classifying schools by higher education researchers and others. The 2025 research activity designations involve an updated methodology “intended to better account for and reflect the multifaceted, wide-ranging research landscape of higher education institutions in America,” according to a on the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher EducationĚýwebsite.

Maxwell Sociologist’s New Documentary Reveals Plight of Syracuse Tenants

A standing room audience gathered in the community room at the Salt City Market in the City of Syracuse on a recent evening for the first public screening of a new documentary film written and directed by Maxwell School sociologist Gretchen Purser.

The 53-minute film, “Raise the Roof: Building Tenant Power in Syracuse,” depicts the formation and activism of the Syracuse Tenants Union (STU), a grassroots organization that advocates for tenants’ rights and legislative change. Purser, associate professor of sociology, partnered with the STU on the project in collaboration with Franklin Thompson of August Fifth Productions, who served as director of photography and producer.

“The film seeks to reveal how, due to the imbalance of power with their landlords, tenants can make few changes as individuals, sometimes face retaliation for reporting code violations, and often wind up stuck due to the cost of relocation and rent,” says Purser. “We wanted to show how tenants organizing collectively can challenge the uneven power imbalance with landlords.”

The film is a culmination of a through the Interdisciplinary Research Leaders (IRL) program sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The IRL program supports action-oriented scholarship undertaken in collaboration with community partners and focuses on equity and health research.

In addition to Purser, the research team included Jamila Michener, professor of government and public policy at Cornell University, and Palmer Harvey, an organizer with STU. The team conducted focus groups throughout the City of Syracuse to better understand tenants’ experiences and introduce them to tenant organizing as a strategy to improve community health. The project was designed to help build STU’s membership base, and data from the focus groups was incorporated into the documentary.

“This is a great example of using social science research to have a real-world impact in our local community,” says Shana Kushner Gadarian, associate dean for research and Merle Goldberg Fabian Professor of Excellence in Citizenship and Critical Thinking. “Professor Purser’s work on tenants’ experiences in Syracuse and how they are working together to advocate for policy change can be a valuable resource for other communities facing challenges with power imbalances between renters and landlords and inadequate housing.”

homes, at union meetings, in offices and at public protests and rallies. Union organizers and tenants are interviewed in the film, along with city officials and Michener.

The tenants shared their experiences with mold, infestation, large rent increases, lead poisoning, structural and plumbing issues, caved-in ceilings and broken furnaces as well as eviction, sexual harassment and predatory rental arrangements.

Purser says the collective organizing aims to achieve tangible improvements in housing conditions for poor and predominantly Black families in the Syracuse community.

Participants in the film offered various proposals to improve conditions for tenants. For example, Good Cause Eviction legislation would cap rent increases and limit evictions to cases of non-payment or lease violation, prohibiting the kinds of retaliatory evictions that Purser and her colleagues documented throughout their research.

Speakers at the screening at Salt City Market also presented ideas, including an updated rental registry and code enforcement system that would mandate lead inspection, charge additional fees for landlords renting unregistered properties, revoke registry for code violators and allocate funds from penal fees to repair damages. City Auditor Alexander Marion, who participated with organizers in a question-and-answer session, said the eventual goal is to use money from violations, fines, registrations and inspections to better fund code enforcement.

Jocelyn Richards, an STU organizer, hopes the documentary inspires viewers and sparks curiosity about tenant organizing.

“This documentary reveals that nearly every tenant in Syracuse is encountering or has encountered similar issues: we’re not alone,” says Richards. “And it’s normal to be fearful of taking action as an individual, but when we come together, we have both more power and more protection from retaliation.”

Film organizers are planning additional screenings in 2025, starting with a showing at the Maxwell School. Members of the University community are invited to join a at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, in the Dr. Paul and Natalie Strasser Legacy Room. Still other viewing opportunities are planned for New York City and Ithaca, New York. The documentary will eventually be publicly available online and accessible on the STU website.

Purser is director of the Law, Society and Policy Integrated Learning Major, research co-director on Advocacy and Activism at the Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration, and a senior research associate at the Center for Qualitative and Multi-Method Inquiry. Her research and teaching focuses on the housing struggles of the urban poor, work and labor market transformation, and the policies and practices of poverty management in the U.S. She has written numerous op-eds and public-facing articles on criminal justice reform, inequality and precarious work in the U.S.

Paycheck DistributionĚý

Weekly Pay Immediately Prior to Winter Break
Weekly pay for the work week ending Wednesday, Dec. 11, will be paid on Wednesday, Dec. 18. Paper paychecks will be delivered to the employee’s department; direct deposit will be available to individuals’ accounts. Employees who have not signed up for direct deposit and will therefore receive a paper paycheck should inquire with their department for check delivery.

All paper paychecks are delivered to the employee’s home department on payday. As a reminder, anyone with a NetID and password is able to set up direct deposit through MySlice.

Weekly and Semi-Monthly Pay During Winter Break
Pay for the work week ending Wednesday, Dec. 18, will be paid on Tuesday, Dec. 24. Pay for the work week ending Wednesday, Dec. 25, will be paid on Tuesday, Dec. 31. This is the last paycheck of the calendar year 2024 Form W-2 reporting period.

Payroll Frequently Asked Questions

If I do not have direct deposit, how will I get my paychecks on Tuesday, Dec. 24 and Tuesday Dec. 31?
Paychecks will be mailed to your permanent address. You can verify your permanent address is accurate by going to MySlice and clicking on the personal profile tile on the employee home page.

Where can I sign up for direct deposit?
Log onto MySlice and click on the payroll tile on the employee home page.

Why might I not receive a paycheck at my home by Tuesday, Dec. 24, and Tuesday Dec. 31?
Several reasons could result in you not receiving your paper paycheck on or before Tuesday, Dec. 24, and Tuesday Dec. 31. Your permanent address in MySlice has to be correct. For example, if you have moved and did not change your address, the paper paycheck will be delivered to the address per MySlice and either forwarded to your new address (if you have filed a change of address form with the U.S. Postal Service) or it will be returned to Payroll. Either case will result in potentially significant delays in your receipt of your paper paycheck.

What happens if my permanent address is incorrect in MySlice?
Since paper paychecks will be delivered by the U.S. Postal Service, Syracuse University cannot control, track or locate your paycheck once mailed. If you have filed a change of address form with the U.S. Postal Service to forward your mail, delivery of your paycheck will be delayed. If no such form has been filed, the paper paycheck will be returned to Payroll. Either case will result in potentially significant delays in your receipt of your paper paycheck.

How do I change my permanent address?
Log in to MySlice and click on the personal profile tile on the employee home page.

If I receive my weekly paper paycheck before Tuesday, Dec. 24, and Tuesday Dec. 31, or my semi-monthly paper paycheck before Tuesday, Dec. 31, can I cash/deposit it?
No. Paychecks dated Tuesday, Dec. 24, or Tuesday, Dec. 31, are not valid prior to that date.

What happens if I don’t receive my paper paycheck?
If you have not received your paycheck by Thursday, Dec. 26, you can call Payroll at 315.443.4042, option 2, and leave a message with the following information:

  • Indicate that you did not receive your paycheck.
  • Give your name and SU I.D. number.
  • Give the name of the University department that you were expecting pay from.
  • Provide a telephone number where you can be reached.
  • Messages will be reviewed at various times during the day and calls will be returned as soon as possible.

No special checks will be issued during Winter Break.

Public Safety
The Department of Public Safety will remain open 24/7 during the Orange Appreciation Days/Winter Break. For emergencies or assistance, call 315.443.2224, connect with us via the Orange Safe app, or text or emailĚý711@syr.edu.

Purchasing
With Orange Appreciation Days approaching, the Purchasing Department wishes to make you aware that any eProcurement requisition received after Friday, December 13, may not be sent out until after Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025. If your purchase requires a bid to be completed, the requisition should be received by Friday, Dec. 6, to ensure processing.

All JPMC credit card transactions, for activity through Nov. 30, should be submitted in the MySlice Travel and Expense Center on or before 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20.

Other purchasing considerations to take into account as we approach the break:

Should your purchase request require additional approvals such as those for sponsored or restricted funds, please build in additional time to your planning process. If your purchase is over $50,000, please allow additional time, as the Office of Budget and Planning must review and approve those orders before they are released. Recreation and Fitness

The Treasurer’s Office at 621 Skytop Rd. will be closed starting Saturday, Dec. 21, through Wednesday Jan. 1, 2025. Only critical functions will continue to be performed during this time, including secure gift processing, bank transfers and electronic payments. Lender Center Hosts LA Conversation on Racial Equity in the Entertainment Industry

Five Syracuse University alumni—all prominent entertainment industry professionals—participated in a panel discussion last week regarding racial wealth disparities in American society and the inequities they have witnessed and experienced in that industry.

The event, “Lender Conversation in Los Angeles: Seeking Racial Equity in the Entertainment Industry,” was hosted by the and was held at the NeueHouse Hollywood. It was attended by about 100 Southern California-area alumni, entertainment industry leaders and other invited guests.

Moderating the panel was journalist and TV host ’99, an alumna of the (VPA) and its Communication and Rhetorical Studies program. Nottingham has worked as a reporter covering national and international breaking news, entertainment and politics. She was joined by four alumni panelists:

  • ’88, president of domestic marketing at Universal Pictures and previous president of domestic theatrical marketing for Sony Pictures Entertainment. Caines is an alumnus of the Newhouse School of Public Communications and an instructor in the school’s Newhouse LA program
  • ’85, an Emmy-nominated writer for film and television and a VPA alumnus
  • ’07, an actress, writer and producer who graduated from VPA. She is known for her recent comedic role on the hit NBC sitcom “A.P. Bio”
  • ’20, an associate attorney in the entertainment transactions group at Mitchell Silberberg & Krupp, LLP. She earned her undergraduate degree from VPA’s Bandier Program for Recording and Entertainment Industries.

, Lender Center director, says the conversation “provided valuable insights into how racial inequity continues to exist within the entertainment industry, as well as offering promising paths towards reducing these barriers. We hope to use what we’ve learned here to help craft new paths towards closing the racial wealth gap in other industries.”

The Los Angeles event was the fourth in a series of conversations hosted by the Lender Center to bring experts and thought leaders together to improve understanding of and present ideas to help mitigate the racial wealth gap’s community impacts. Those events and other research initiatives are made possible by a $2.7 million grant from MetLife Foundation. The funding has also supported three research symposia, three postdoctoral scholars and 15 faculty grants for research on the topic.

“Lender Center’s work with support from MetLife Foundation generated important new thought leadership, boosted awareness of racial wealth equity issues and created valuable new partnerships with key institutions and organizations,” says Phillips. “We have discovered many new possibilities for addressing how the wealth gap affects communities, and those ideas have provided worthwhile new understandings.”

Roster Revealed for 2024 CBT Celebrity Classic Basketball Game

width=527A news conference at the JMA Wireless Dome Tuesday had the feel of a family reunion. There was plenty of ribbing between participants about growing older and their skills fading, but make no mistake, their competitive nature still exists. After all, these are athletes who played at a very high level.

“We’re all competitive,” said John Wallace ’96, a former member of the Syracuse men’s basketball team. “That’s why we came to Syracuse.”

Wallace is part of a large group of returning Syracuse University athletes participating in the CBT Celebrity Classic basketball game on Sept. 12. The game is part of . Every three years, Black and Latino alumni come back to campus to celebrate their accomplishments, meet current students and remain connected with the University.

On Tuesday, organizers revealed the list of returning athletes who plan to be on hand for the game. Among them is Vera “Sweet V” Jones ’88, a Syracuse Hall of Fame basketball player. Jones joined the news conference from Florida, pausing briefly to mention she was still getting alerts in the wake of Hurricane Debby passing nearby.

“Speaking of which, I plan to be a hurricane on the mic and am very excited to be coming back,” said Jones, who will serve as game announcer. “This game is for those who can walk the walk. I can talk the talk and that’s what I plan to do.”

Rachel Vassel ’91, associate vice president from the Office of Multicultural Advancement, mentioned that while players enjoy coming back to play against one another, there is a real excitement for being back in front of the fans.

“Fans in Syracuse have rallied behind our teams, and we consistently hear from those who have played in previous CBT Celebrity Classics about their fond memories of playing before the home crowd,” Vassel said.

“When we think about community and bringing people together, Syracuse University athletics has a very strong attraction, and at the heart of it are the men and women who left it on the court and the field,” said Melanie Littlejohn, president and CEO of CNY Community Foundation and a sponsor of CBT. “The excitement that Syracuse athletics has brought to this community is something the Community Foundation wanted to get behind because we recognize that together we are absolutely stronger.”

And of course, about family.

“It’s all that brotherhood and sisterhood from being at Syracuse,” said John Wallace, “and bleeding Orange.”

The net portion of the proceeds from the CBT Celebrity Classic Basketball Game will support the Women’s Basketball Head Coach’s Fund.

5 Honorary Degrees to Be Presented at 2024 Commencement

An award-winning journalist, a hall of fame basketball coach, a nationally recognized library conservationist, a global financial executive and a renowned computer scientist will be recognized with honorary degrees from Syracuse University at the 2024 Commencement on Sunday, May 12, at the JMA Wireless Dome.

Hilton Als, writer at The New Yorker; Jim Boeheim ’66, G’73, former Syracuse men’s basketball coach and special assistant to the director of athletics; husband and wife, William “Bill” Brodsky ’65, L’68, chairman of a specialized investment firm and an investment management firm, and Joan Breier Brodsky ’67, G’68, a National Museum and Library Services Board member; and Lynn Conway, inventor of methods for designing Very Large Scale Integrated silicon chips, will be honored for their outstanding achievements in their professional careers and the difference they have made in the lives of others.

Als is an award-winning journalist, critic and curator. He has been a staff writer at The New Yorker since 1994. Prior to The New Yorker, Als was a staff writer for the Village Voice and an editor-at-large at Vibe. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism (2017), Yale’s Windham-Campbell Literature Prize (2016), the George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism (2002-03) and a Guggenheim Fellowship (2000).

His first book, “The Women,” was published in 1996. His next book, “White Girls,” was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and the winner of the Lambda Literary Award in 2014. His most recent book, “My Pinup,” a meditation on love and of loss, of Prince and of desire, was published in November 2022.

In 2017, he curated the critically lauded exhibition “Alice Neel, Uptown,” which traveled from David Zwirner, New York, to Victoria Miro, London and Venice. In 2019, Als presented “God Made My Face: A Collective Portrait of James Baldwin” at David Zwirner, New York, followed by Frank Moore at, David Zwirner, New York (2021) and Toni Morrison’s “Black Book,” at David Zwirner, New York (2022). He curated a series of three successive exhibitions for the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, of the work of Celia Paul (2018), Lynette Yiadom-Boakye (2019) and Njideka Akunyili Crosby (2022). In 2022, he curated “Joan Didion: What She Means” at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, which traveled to the Perez Art Museum Miami in 2023. He curated Jared Buckhiester “No heaven, no how,” which opened March 2024 at the David Kordansky Gallery in Los Angeles.

Als is currently a teaching professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and has also taught at Columbia University’s School of the Arts, Princeton University, Wesleyan University and the Yale School of Drama.

Hall of Fame member Jim Boeheim had a remarkable run as head coach at his alma mater, Syracuse University. Boeheim guided the Orange to winning records in 46 of 47 campaigns. Syracuse made 35 trips into the NCAA Tournament, including Final Four appearances in 1987, 1996, 2003, 2013 and 2016. The Orange won the national championship in 2003. Boeheim retired from coaching after the 2023 season but continues to work for the University.

Boeheim was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005. He was also honored with the John R. Wooden “Legends of Coaching” Award.

Boeheim enrolled at Syracuse in 1962 and was a walk-on with the basketball team. The Orange were 22-6 overall his senior year and earned the program’s second-ever NCAA Tournament berth. He earned a bachelor’s from the College of Arts and Sciences and the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and a master’s from the Maxwell School. In 1969 he turned to a career in coaching and was hired as a graduate assistant at Syracuse. In 1976, he was named head coach.

A four-time BIG EAST Coach of the Year, Boeheim has been honored as NABC District II Coach of the Year 10 times and USBWA District II Coach of the Year on four occasions. In the fall of 2000, he received Syracuse University’s Arents Award, the school’s highest alumni honor.

Boeheim was named 2001 USA Basketball National Coach of the Year. He has served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic teams that won gold medals in 2008, 2012 and 2016, and the World Cup in 2010 and 2014.

A champion of many charitable causes, Boeheim and his wife started the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation with the goal of enriching the lives of kids in need.

Joan Breier Brodsky ’67, G’68

Joan Brodsky graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1967 with a bachelor’s in Latin language and literature and went on to graduate from the School of Information Studies (formerly the School of Library Science) in 1968 with a master of science degree.

Joan is passionate and knowledgeable about rare book and cultural heritage conservation and has been active nationally for many years, including sitting on the board of the Newberry Library in Chicago, as a Trustee for the Abraham Lincoln Museum and Library, as well as the library advisory board of the Jewish Theological Seminary. She also served on the Advisory Board for the School of Information Studies and has been a member of the Syracuse University Libraries Advisory Board since its founding.

In 2022, Joan was appointed by President Joe Biden to the National Museum and Library Services Board, which advises the Institute for Museum and Library Services, the largest federal funder of America’s museums, libraries and related organizations through grantmaking, research and policy development.

At Syracuse University, she is the founder and sponsor of the Brodsky Series for Advancement of Library Conservation. This sponsored program promotes and advances knowledge of library conservation theory, practice and application among wide audiences, both on campus, in the region and now online. This is an annual lecture series and workshop on book and paper conservation now in its 19th year.

In 2022, she and her husband Bill, a Syracuse University life trustee, funded the Conservation Lab in the Bird library and the Joan Breier Brodsky Media Preservation Vault in honor of Joan’s commitment to the preservation and conservation at the Bird Library.

Joan and Bill have been married for 57 years and reside in Chicago.

William “Bill” Brodsky ’65, L’68

Bill is chairman of Cedar Street Asset Management, LLC, an investment management firm devoted to investing in equity securities in international markets, and chairman of Bosun Asset Management, a specialized investment firm.

During his combined 35-year career at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), he was recognized as a global leader in the development of the future and options markets. His contributions to Chicago’s futures and options markets were a major factor in Chicago’s becoming the world’s preeminent city for the futures and options markets.

Bill served as chairman of the CBOE Holdings Inc. now known as CBOE Global Markets and its predecessor firms between 1997 and 2017. He also served as the chief executive officer of the CBOE from 1997 to 2013. During his CBOE tenure, he served as the chairman of the World Federation of Exchanges and the International Options Market Association. From 1985 to 1997, he was president and CEO at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

Bill, who earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of Arts and Sciences and the Maxwell School and a law degree from the College of Law, began his career in 1968 at the Wall Street-based investment banking and securities brokerage firm of Model, Roland and Co. Inc. In 1974, he joined the American Stock Exchange and ultimately was executive vice president for operations.

In 1982, he became executive vice president and chief operating officer of the CME. In 1985, he was appointed president and CEO of the CME.

In 2019, Governor J.B. Pritzker named him to co-chair the newly formed State’s Pension Consolidation Feasibility Task Force. In 2022, he was inducted into “The Order of Lincoln,” the state’s highest honor for professional achievement and public service.

Brodsky is chair emeritus of the board of directors of Navy Pier Inc., one of Chicago’s most iconic cultural destinations, and past chair of the board of directors of Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Brodsky was nominated by President Biden and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2022 to the Board of Directors of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation, which maintains a special reserve fund authorized by Congress to help investors at failed brokerage firms.

Lynn Conway

Lynn Conway

Conway is a renowned computer scientist who revolutionized global information technology by inventing methods for designing Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) silicon chips. Her work paved the way for the powerful microchips that animate modern high-technology systems.

As a young engineer at IBM Research in the 1960s, Conway made pioneering innovations in computer architecture. Sadly, IBM fired her in 1968 upon learning she was undergoing gender transition. She restarted her career in a new identity in “stealth-mode” after completing her transition.

While working at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center in the 1970s, Conway innovated breakthrough methods that enabled engineers to design very powerful, complex chips. In 1980, Conway’s seminal textbook “Introduction to VLSI Systems,” co-authored by Caltech Professor Carver Mead, became an instant classic, forever transforming computing and information technology. Professor John V. Oldfield brought the new VLSI methods into Syracuse right at the beginning of that revolution.

In the early 1980s, Conway became assistant director for strategic computing at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. In 1985 she joined the University of Michigan as professor of electrical engineering and computer science and associate dean of engineering.

When nearing retirement in 1999 she began quietly coming out as a trans woman, using her new to share her story with friends and colleagues. Conway became active in transgender advocacy.

In 2012 Conway published a that revealed how—closeted and hidden behind the scenes—she conceived the ideas and orchestrated the events that disruptively changed global industries.

Conway is a life fellow of the IEEE, fellow of the AAAS, winner of Computer Pioneer Award of the IEEE Computer Society, member of the Hall of Fellows of the Computer History Museum, a member of the National Academy of Engineering and holds five honorary degrees. In 2023 she was inducted into the for the invention of VLSI. She was awarded the by the and the .

New Carnegie-Maxwell Policy Planning Lab Launches Foreign Affairs Training Program

A new lab housed in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs seeks to bridge the gap between scholarship and policy in foreign affairs by providing training for professionals working in a range of related careers.

The recently launched Carnegie-Maxwell Policy Planning Lab brings together emerging national security leaders, subject matter experts and seasoned policy professionals to provide a six-month program for emerging foreign affairs leaders.

Program participants will attend two weekend-long, in-person workshops where they will analyze contemporary regional and functional issues, identify challenges and formulate policy. In addition to the workshops, the program includes an online seminar focused on developing management and leadership skills organizers say are critical as foreign policy experts progress in their careers.

Each cohort can accommodate up to 20 participants; there are no associated costs, as the lab is supported by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, a grantmaking foundation established in 1911 by Andrew Carnegie to support the “advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding.”

The $400,000 Carnegie award is provided through its Bridging the Gap initiative, which seeks to connect policy and academic communities to positively impact foreign policy decision-making.

Michael John Williams, associate professor of public administration and international affairs and director of the master of arts in international relations program, was awarded the funding on behalf of Maxwell and serves as the lab’s founding director. The lab will be situated in the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs at Maxwell.

“We’re grateful to the Carnegie Corporation for its support and recognition of the critical role this lab and training will provide those working in the field of foreign affairs,” says Williams. “This is a wonderful opportunity to connect busy policymakers who are inundated with challenges with scholars who have time to study issues in-depth and mull through opportunities for the future. Bringing them together in this format will allow younger policymakers not only to think differently about the challenges they face, but also to form lifelong relationships with scholars working on issues germane to their interests.”

Williams says a quote by former U.S. Secretary of State Dean Acheson underscores the lab’s objective. In the early years of the Cold War, Acheson said the purpose of policy planning is to “anticipate the emerging form of things to come, to reappraise policies which had acquired their own momentum and went on after the reasons for them had ceased, and to stimulate and, when necessary, to devise basic policies crucial to the conduct of our foreign affairs.”

The Policy Planning Lab’s training program will be especially beneficial for those who have roughly five-to-seven years’ experience working in government, such as State Department employees and policy advisors in Congress, says Williams. Those interested in participating may apply or can be nominated by a colleague, supervisor or other professional affiliate.

Each cohort will focus on a timely international topic. The first program’s theme is “Postwar: Europe, Ukraine and the Future of European Order.” It begins with an in-person workshop at Syracuse University from April 19-21; the second in-person session will be held at the University’s Minnowbrook Lodge in the Adirondacks from Aug. 17-20.

Williams brings expertise to the topic; he recently returned from a , funded by a Fulbright-North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Security Studies Award. Based at the Centre for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy at the Brussels School of Governance, he examined NATO, Russia and the enduring war in Ukraine.

Policy Planning Lab participants will likewise benefit from Williams’ Moynihan Institute colleagues, who bring a range of perspectives and focus areas. Tetiana Hranchak, for instance, is a visiting assistant teaching professor who fled her home in Ukraine following the Russian invasion because she was at risk due to her research on the politics of memory. Brian Taylor, professor of political science and director of the Moynihan Institute, authored “The Code of Putinism” (Oxford University Press, 2018), which shows how the mentality of Russian President Valdimir Putin has shaped the country’s politics over the past two decades.

“The Policy Planning Lab aligns with Moynihan’s mission to support scholarship, training and practice in global affairs,” says Taylor. “It addresses a critical need, providing an opportunity for younger policymakers to step outside the day-to-day and think deeply about global challenges, and an opportunity for scholars to gain insights and perspective from program participants who are on the frontlines of these issues.”

The Carnegie funding supports the lab for the next two years. Williams says additional support is possible to ensure its longevity. “We are open to additional sponsorship by organizations that believe in the necessity of connecting the knowledge of scholars with policy formulation,” he says. “No matter where you look in the world today, from the current conflict in the Middle East, to the rise of China in Asia and the surge of organized crime across Latin America, there are any number of problems where policymakers could well utilize in-depth academic knowledge.”

Other initiatives funded by Carnegie’s Bridging the Gap program include the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs at Johns Hopkins University and the Teaching, Research & International Policy lab at the College of William and Mary. The original Bridging the Gap program began at American University (AU) under the leadership of James Goldgeier and Bruce Jentleson; Williams is an alumnus of the AU program.

Additionally, Bridging the Gap sponsors a book series, for which there is another Maxwell School faculty connection: Catherine Herrold’s “Delta Democracy: Pathways to Incremental Civic Revolution in Egypt and Beyond” (Oxford University Press, 2020) is among its supported works and was awarded the Virginia A. Hodgkinson Research Book Prize in November 2021.

'Know Your Why': Sport Industry Executives Offer Students Valuable Advice During Falk College DEIA Lecture

At the start of his keynote address at the Oct. 12, Jonathan B. Wanderstock “Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility in Sport” lecture, had one request for the large gathering of students in attendance in the Dineen Hall. “If nothing else, I want you to walk away with one new concept or tool that will help you on your journey to success,” said Clayton, senior vice president and head of social impact and equity for the Rock Entertainment Group, which includes the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers.

It’s safe to say that the students—and everyone else who attended—walked away with more than one concept to consider and a far better understanding of what it means for an organization to practice what it preaches when it comes to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA).

Keynote speaker Kevin Clayton is the Senior Vice President and Head of Social Impact and Equity for the Rock Entertainment Group, which includes the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers.

Clayton explained that his job title is his “what,” but it’s a person’s “why” that has more impact because your why is your purpose. For Clayton and the Cavaliers, their “why” became clear after George Floyd, a Black man, was murdered by a Minnesota police officer in May 2020.

“It wasn’t until post-George Floyd that we knew our why: connect the platform of sports to social justice,” Clayton said. “We’re the only city where three sports teams [the Cavaliers, the NFL’s Browns and MLB’s Guardians] have met every two weeks for the past three years around issues for social justice. We focus on law enforcement, education and voting/civic engagement, and for all three teams to be involved the impact is like 1+1+1 equals 100 and not 1+1+1 equals three.”

The “Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility in Sport” lecture series is made possible through a generous gift to the from alumnus Jonathan B. Wanderstock, who earned his undergraduate degree in public communications and management from Syracuse University and is a for the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Medical Campus.

The second annual event featuring Clayton and four other sports industry executives was hosted by the Department of Sport Management in conjunction with the Syracuse University College of Law’s Office of Career Services and Entertainment and Sports Law Society.

“The establishment of the Sport Management DEIA symposium by Jonathan Wanderstock has impacted the lives of hundreds of students across campus, not only those attending the symposium but from having our panelists attend eight classes as part of their supportive contributions,” said , director and chair of the Department of Sport Management.

“Our department stands in solidarity with our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility as we focus on areas of awareness, training and education,” Veley added. “We seek to use sport as a platform for social justice and social responsibility while encouraging open, honest dialog, including those related to racism, privilege and allyship.”

In addition to Clayton’s keynote address, the event featured a panel discussion moderated by , associate dean for inclusivity, diversity, equity and accessibility at the . The panel included:

  • , George and Betty Blanda Endowed Professor in sport leadership and director of the Future of Sport Institute at the University of Kentucky;
  • , volunteer executive director of Syracuse Challenger Baseball and founder and board member of the Carrier Park Field of Dreams All-Inclusive Sports Park;
  • , assistant athletic director for diversity, equity and inclusion at Villanova University; and
  • , head women’s basketball coach and diversity, equity and inclusion athletics director at Rochester Institute of Technology.

The panelists explained their roles in DEIA and social justice initiatives and answered questions from Brown Burton. After a Q&A with the students, Clayton and the panelists remained for one-on-one discussions with students.

In his address, Clayton said one of the ongoing issues with DEIA is that “we have not come to a universal understanding of what diversity is.” He said the Cavaliers and NBA have defined diversity as the “collective mixture of our fans, team members, properties, teams and partners characterized by our differences as well as our similarities.”

He said it’s possible to have diversity but not inclusion unless you create a trusting environment in which all are included, respected and supported. And equity, Clayton says, is building an “organizational landscape where all are empowered to be their authentic selves and contribute.”

At the end of the Q&A, Lewis—a Syracuse native who attended Villanova University—offered advice for students courtesy of a conversation she had with renowned political activist, author and University of California professor Angela Davis, who notably once said, “I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.”

“I asked her, ‘What hope do we have?’” Lewis said. “She said, ‘Ask the youth; they are the future.’”

“I came away from that meeting (with Davis) asking myself, ‘What am I going to do to help (students) be ready to fight for social justice?’” Lewis said. “So, I would say that we all have a role to play.”
