IDJC Names Veteran News Executive Spring 2026 Visiting Fellow

Merrill Brown will study existing and evolving business models across the media landscape and new ways to sustain quality journalism.

Merrill Brown, a veteran news executive and media consultant, has been named a visiting professionals fellow for spring 2026 by the (IDJC).

He plans to use his fellowship to study existing and evolving business models across the media landscape and new ways to sustain quality journalism.

The founding editor in chief of MSNBC.com (now ms.now), Brown brings decades of experience at the intersection of journalism, media innovation and business strategy.

He also served as senior vice president at RealNetworks, editorial director at G/O Media, founder and CEO of the News Project, co-founder of the Online News Association and inaugural director of the School of Communication and Media at Montclair State University.

In addition, Brown has served in roles at The Washington Post and Court TV, and with numerous nonprofit and advisory boards related to journalism, media and civic engagement.

Exploring Sustainable Journalism Models

Brown’s fellowship project will examine revenue strategies, emerging technologies, artificial intelligence and opportunities for innovation to support high-quality journalism, particularly at the local level.

Brown, who holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Washington University in St. Louis, has also served as a judge for the Newhouse School’s .

A joint initiative of the and the , the IDJC engages in research, teaching, experiential learning and industry partnerships to address challenges to democracy related to the information environment.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to become a fellow at the IDJC,” Brown says. “I’ve been an admirer of the research and teaching done at Newhouse and the Maxwell School. Joining with the experts at the two schools and with [IDJC Kramer Director] to explore media business models and new ways to sustain quality journalism is a timely and important opportunity.”

As part of the fellowship, Brown will engage with students through guest lectures and public programming. His goal is to develop a long-term structure for studying media business models within an academic setting.

“I look forward to being able to conduct research on this vital topic and to share that work and my news industry experience with the University community,” Brown says. “Syracuse is at the center of the urgent future of news research and experimentation, and I look forward to contributing to those efforts.”

Talev sayd Brown’s work and experience will complement two trailblazing initiatives announced recently by the University, including IDJC’s own .

Led by , associate professor of communications, Local NeXT Lab is the first project of its kind that will connect newsrooms, funders and academics to pioneer journalism innovations, with the goal of strengthening local news.

Brown’s work will also be instrumental to the development of the University’s . The center, which is led by Newhouse and the , is building real-world skills in media, entrepreneurship and digital strategy to prepare students for the 21st-century economy.

“We are proud to host Merrill this year as he develops this important work,” Talev says. “Merrill’s research and engagement with students will focus on developing and sustaining the media and communications industries of the future.”

Law Students Intern With Judges Through Sotomayor Program

Three Syracuse law students spent the summer working for judges in New York courts and met Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Shaking hands with a Supreme Court justice is a dream come true for anyone in the legal profession, but that dream for three students who participated last summer in .

Students Imari Roque L’27, Rebeca Chavar L’27 and Emma Bissell L’27 participated in the program, which aims to “cultivate and develop future leaders from underserved communities” through judicial internships, educational experiences and other resources to help achieve professional goals.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor is the first Latina and third woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009. Growing up in public housing in the Bronx, Sotomayor is known for her respect for the judicial process and passionate approach to the law, particularly in regard to civil liberties and the rights of those from marginalized communities.

For two months this past summer, Roque, Chavar and Bissell worked full-time for judges, while also participating in professional development training and networking as part of the program. Each worked in a different judicial environment, but all three gained invaluable insight and experience working in courtrooms under the direct supervision of a judge.

Roque has been interested in the Sotomayor Program since she was 14 years old, but it wasn’t until she was a first year at the College of Law that she applied to the program’s law school division.

“I’ve always been drawn to being a lawyer, and Justice Sotomayor is the first person who comes to mind,” she says. “No one in my family is a lawyer, so Sonia Sotomayor—a Puerto Rican woman from the Bronx like me—has been my role model.”

Roque was matched with the Hon. Bryant Tovar, a judge of the Housing Part of Civil Court of the City of New York, dealing with landlord-tenant matters, civil litigation and immigration law. The work focused on the Small Property part of the court, which handles housing issues before trial, particularly cases where landlords are suing tenants.

“I became really familiar with what city court looks like, developed a rapport with the judge, clerk and others, and learned a lot about negotiations and alternate dispute resolution, as well as what everyday law looks like,” says Roque. “It was interesting because Judge Tovar leads with understanding and empathy on the bench, which gave me a different perspective on the law.”

Chavar worked for the Hon. Javier Vargas in New York State Court of Claims in Manhattan,  where she gained hands-on experience observing three major trials. Judge Vargas encouraged his interns to engage deeply in their work, often discussing with her issues brought against the state of New York, involving issues such as car accidents and claims of excessive force by law enforcement.

“I was thrilled when Judge Vargas asked me to help draft a memo recommending how to decide on a motion, and that set the tone for the kind of work he expected,” she says. “I also helped draft a decision for one of the trials, did research on pending trials and my final project was a case where I wrote a decision by myself for review by the clerk and the judge.”

Bissell discovered the Sotomayor Program through an email Mary Kate Tramontano L’26 sent to the Women’s Law Student Association listserv, an opportunity that ultimately led her to work with district civil and criminal court judges in the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn.

“It was awesome because I was able to observe a lot of different types of trials,” Bissell says. “I was assigned to a judicial clerk who helped me with whatever I needed. Getting to the end of my internship and seeing that I could write a full legal opinion was the best feeling ever.”

Meeting a Legal Legend

After a summer of learning the ins-and-outs of the courtroom, students were invited to an event highlighted by a visit from Sotomayor herself. Not only did the interns get to hear the Supreme Court justice speak, but they also had the chance to talk with Sotomayor and take photos with her.

“It was a full circle moment for 14-year-old Imari,” says Roque. “I shook hands and said hello to someone I’ve admired most of my life. It’s funny because she looked like someone who could be in my family. The experience really helped me understand that that could be me.”

Chavar was also awestruck by Sotomayor.

“We took a group photo, and I was lucky enough to be placed right next to her!” Chavar says. “She asked me where I went to law school. The reason I’m in law school is largely inspired by Justice Sotomayor. When she went to the bench, I was in middle school and I have a distinct memory that inspired me to go to law school. So it was a big deal to hear her wisdom. A majority of the students there were from underrepresented backgrounds in the legal field, and Justice Sotomayor was a beacon of hope and encouraged us to trust in the legal system despite all that’s going on in the world.”

“You read her opinions, and you know that she is incredible, but then you see her in action, and she is so eloquent,” says Bissell. “When I started law school, I was questioning my decision. And I think The Sotomayor Program helped reinforce that those in the legal field are making decisions that are impacting people’s lives. I know I want to be a part of that type of work.”

Newhouse Professor Marks 30 Years Since Dayton With Balkan Photo Exhibition

The exhibition features powerful images that capture cultural identity and everyday life across the Balkans three decades after the historic peace agreement.

Snapping photos with just a smartphone,  spent four months traveling across southeastern Europe to create a powerful collection of images that capture life in a region still shaped by its history of conflict and resilience.

The results from Strong’s overseas endeavor are now on display. The new “Call to Me, Balkans” photo exhibition is open on campus in the Schine Student Center’s Panasci Lounge. The exhibition, also simultaneously on display in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, features black-and-white images from Strong’s travels to the region during his 2023 sabbatical and two subsequent trips.

The timing is significant: “Call to Me, Balkans” commemorates the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Accords, the agreement that ended the Bosnian war of the 1990s.

“‘Call to Me, Balkans’ captures the rich, diverse and interconnected cultures of the region,” says Strong, an associate professor of visual communications who teaches photo and video storytelling at the . “It celebrates the resilience and beauty of an area heavily impacted by such a devastating conflict.”

Strong has said he hopes the exhibition also fosters connections with Central New York’s Bosnian immigrant community.

Strong is The Alexia Endowed Chair at the Newhouse School. Through grants, scholarships and special projects for photographers, filmmakers and other visual creatives,  promotes the power of visual storytelling to shed light on significant issues around the world.

The November opening of the exhibition at Schine featured remarks from , dean of the Newhouse School; , senior associate dean for academic affairs in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs; , professor and undergraduate director of Maxwell’s anthropology department; and Imam , assistant dean for religious and spiritual life at Hendricks Chapel.

The exhibition is curated and designed by his wife, , the curator of communications, design and exhibitions for The Alexia, who also teaches graphic design and writing courses at Newhouse. Strong’s travels took him through Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia and Slovenia.

Strong developed the Schine exhibition with support from the Newhouse School’s , which funds faculty and student research. The National Gallery exhibition in Sarajevo was funded by the University’s .

Strong said he challenged himself on this project to work exclusively with a smartphone in order to push creative boundaries and prove that powerful storytelling doesn’t always require expensive equipment.

This project has already received international acclaim, with work from the exhibition awarded by the Sarajevo Photography Festival and featured in China as a solo exhibition at the Pingyao International Photo Festival in 2024.

Student Explores Sports and Entertainment Law Through Alumni-Founded Firm

Jill Nelsen L'27 gained hands-on experience for NIL rules and intellectual property issues while building professional network in sports and fashion.

Jill Nelsen L’27 playing soccer and loving sports. She was recruited to California State-East Bay with a four-year athletic scholarship to play women’s varsity soccer, while also earning a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. When she later decided to pursue law school, she hoped to stay connected to the world of sports and entertainment—but she never imagined that would open doors to opportunities like Miami Swim Week and New York Fashion Week.

During her first year year, Nelsen joined the Entertainment & Sports Law Society, often attending networking events with alumni thriving in this space. At one such event, she met Riley Christian L’16, now an entertainment and sports attorney with , a firm he founded in 2022.

Nelsen and Christian had a lot in common; she had been a collegiate soccer player and he a collegiate baseball player. At the time, Christian was rebranding his boutique law firm in New York City to focus more on the areas of sports and entertainment that dealt with navigating the NCAA’s new Name Image and Likeness (NIL) rules for college athletes and handling legal issues related to artificial intelligence in the entertainment and music business.

Nelsen later reached out to Christian, asking if he might need an intern, and he agreed to bring her onboard.

At first, she helped navigate the logo development for the firm’s rebranding, later moving on to legal research for defamation cases, statute of limitations issues, trademark infringements and intellectual property, while learning as much as she could about the ever-evolving NIL rules.

Piecing Together Sports, Fashion and the Law

While her whole internship experience was exciting, Nelsen says two highlights were attending Miami Swim Week and New York Fashion Week.

“Riley knew these big events would be good networking experiences for me, and he also knew I liked to talk to people and that would be a good way to spread the word about the rebranding of Artifex Athleta,” she says.

The annual Miami Swim Week is the world’s largest swimwear and resort wear event that includes runway fashion shows, trade shows and pop-up shops, as well as the chance to meet and network with all kinds of people connected to this area of fashion— from designers and buyers to athletes, agents and the media.

“Yes, it was focused on swimwear, but there are so many aspects of the law attached to the fashion space, including trademarks, sponsorships, negotiating and closing NIL and more,” Nelsen says. “It was a fascinating experience to see it in action.”

She also attended New York Fashion Week, one of the “big four” fashion events in the world, showcasing what’s going to be “in” for the upcoming season. The biannual event includes exclusive runway shows by world-class designers that are attended by celebrities, influencers, fashion buyers and the media.

This, too, gave Nelsen an opportunity to network with a host of agents, attorneys and other business leaders in the fashion space.

“The experience of not only attending these fabulous events but also having the chance to work with Riley helped me begin to make a name for myself as more than just an athlete,” she says. “The younger version of me would be emotional to see all the things I’ve accomplished both in my course work, as well as internship opportunities. My takeaway from this entire experience is that I can do it, and there are people who truly believe in me and see my potential.”

Uplifting Women Is the Ultimate Win

After completing her education at the College of Law, Nelsen’s dream is to one day work as general counsel for a NBA or NFL team and negotiate from the team’s side with players and their agents. But her ultimate goal is to one day be a general manager or even owner of a WNBA team.

“Sports, and now working in sports—has always been the dream,” she says.

Her older sister has been a role model, she says, “moving mountains” as director of services and retention for the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers.

“I’ve also learned a lot about creating space for people like me, particularly as a first-generation Latina woman,” Nelsen says. “I’ve been told I’m too much, too blunt, too Californian, but I’ve also been told ‘don’t dim your light to fit into a box that’s been predefined for you.’ I am proud to be a Syracuse law student with the opportunity to contribute to uplifting women in the sports and entertainment business and also within the legal field. That is a real win for me.”

Student Research Unlocks Protein Interaction Puzzle

Yuming Jiang ’25 turns undergraduate math-based research into a published physics breakthrough that could transform how scientists predict drug-protein interactions.

When Yuming Jiang ’25 came to Syracuse University from Nanjing, China, he was drawn by the school’s vibrant orange color and its poetic Chinese nickname—”Snow City University.” But it was the opportunity to dive into scientific research as an undergraduate that would define his Syracuse experience and launch his career in physics.

Now a first-year Ph.D. student in the College of Arts and Sciences’ , Jiang has achieved what many researchers spend years working toward: publishing groundbreaking research in the prestigious . The fundamental research has broad applicability to biochemical processes, protein analytics and drug development. The remarkable part? He completed this work as an undergraduate, demonstrating how Syracuse empowers students to conduct graduate-level research with genuine real-world implications.

Initially a major in A&S as an undergrad, Jiang’s interest in physics was sparked by an entry level course. He reached out to physics professor and began assisting with computational work and coding on high-energy particle physics research. It also turned his primary interest from mathematics to physics, adding a double major.

Two years later, professor recognized Jiang’s exceptional performance in a thermodynamics course and invited him to join his biophysics research program and collaborate with a theoretical biophysicist, assistant teaching professor .

Throughout summer 2024, Jiang immersed himself in the project—developing theoretical frameworks, creating diagrams and performing complex calculations. The work focused on understanding how proteins interact with cell receptors, a fundamental process that controls countless biological functions.

“As an undergraduate researcher, Yuming did superbly well working on a complex issue involving competitive interactions in modern molecular biology, which can be addressed through theoretical and computational physics,” says Movileanu. “He put in relentless effort to overcome any challenges during this research, and he possesses all the personal qualities necessary to achieve great success as a graduate student as well.”

Solving a Complex Puzzle

Cells rely on proteins to communicate and control what happens both inside and outside their boundaries. At the cell surface, “hub” proteins called receptors act like docking stations, connecting with numerous other proteins called ligands that deliver different signals or trigger various cellular actions.

The challenge? These protein interactions are constantly in flux—attaching, detaching and competing with one another based on concentration levels and binding strength. The goal was to predict how different types of ligands compete for the receptor—for example, which ligand has the advantage, and how that advantage shifts as each ligand’s concentration changes.

Jiang and his collaborators applied an innovative solution: queuing theory, a mathematical approach originally developed to study waiting lines. By modeling how proteins “take turns” binding to receptors, they created a system that can calculate receptor occupancy based on the rate at which each protein binds and unbinds, and its concentration.

Their findings revealed surprising complexity. Even in a simple system with just three proteins competing for the same receptor, changing the amount of one protein dramatically affects how the other two interact—similar to how one person cutting in line changes everyone else’s wait time.

For more complex systems involving many competing proteins, the team developed a simplified “coarse-grained” model that groups similar proteins together, making the calculations more manageable while maintaining accuracy.

By providing a quantitative tool to predict receptor behavior when multiple signaling molecules compete for binding sites, this research could help scientists better understand how cells process complex signals and how disruptions in these interactions might lead to disease. For pharmaceutical development, the ability to predict drug-protein interactions could accelerate development while reducing the need for certain human trials. “We might be able to predict how a drug is acting on a target protein, target cells,” Jiang says. ” I think that’s the most profound implication.”

A Pattern of Excellence

The research publication was not an isolated success. Jiang won the mathematics department’s for promising math majors as a junior and the Erdős Prize for Excellence in Mathematical Problem-Solving for his performance in the Putnam Competition, one of the most prestigious mathematics competitions in the United States. He was also named a 2025 Syracuse University Scholar, the highest undergraduate honor the University bestows.

Jiang’s story illustrates the University’s distinctive approach to undergraduate education—one where students don’t simply learn about science from textbooks, but actively contribute to advancing human knowledge. By connecting talented undergraduates with faculty conducting cutting-edge research, Syracuse creates opportunities for discoveries that resonate beyond campus.

“Working with undergraduates like Yuming is a very rewarding experience,” says Skanata, one of Jiang’s faculty mentors. “It was a joy to see him succeed and I look forward to his future contributions as he taps into the immense potential that he carries within.”

For Jiang, research was an essential component to his undergraduate experience. “Doing research as an undergrad allows you to experience more than your peers,” he says. “Undergraduate research allows you to explore different fields without the intense pressure graduate students face, providing freedom to discover genuine interests and build skills.”

As he continues his Ph.D. studies in physics, building the knowledge foundation needed for theoretical physics, Jiang carries forward the skills and confidence gained through his undergraduate work. “I love the process,” he says. “Being lost in a tough problem and working through solutions in an organized way to find what’s true and what can advance science.”

6 Student Ventures Awarded Fall 2025 Orange Innovation Fund Grants

The library-administered program provides up to $5,000 to help entrepreneurs move innovative ideas toward commercialization.

The University the recipients of the Fall 2025 Orange Innovation Fund, a competitive grant program that fuels early-stage ideas developed by student entrepreneurs. The fund supports innovative projects across campus that demonstrate strong potential to commercialize research.

The fund, administered through the University Libraries, is designed to help student founders move their ventures from concept to prototype on the path to commercialization. The grants range up to $5,000 and enable recipients to build MVPs (minimum viable products), test ideas with real users and validate market potential. Since its inception, the fund has helped dozens of student teams advance toward competitive accelerators, patent filings and commercial launches.

Winners were selected by reviewers from across the campus innovation ecosystem, along with alumni who are successful founders and industry experts.

The Fall 2025 recipients are the following:

  • Gabi Josefson ’28 (Martin J. Whitman School of Management and S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications) and Mitchell Breakstone ’28 (Whitman School ) received funding for EXCHKR, a platform that simplifies how clubs, sports teams and Greek organizations manage payments and track budgets. EXCHKR’s team will use this grant to develop the platform’s full MVP, integrating Stripe and Plaid for secure payments and real-time dashboards.
  • Jack Venerus ’27 (School of Information Studies) received support for WingStat, a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform that makes aircraft sales data more accessible for brokers. The Orange Innovation Fund will help WingStat build its MVP and launch a beta test with aircraft brokers nationwide.
  • Trey Augliano ’27 (Whitman School) was selected for Utopia Beauty, a retail startup exclusively curating science-backed beauty products. Funding will support the creation of a proprietary tool that grades beauty products using the company’s Lab Protocol, integrating AI and customer testing to refine results before launch.
  • Haley Greene ’26 (Newhouse School) received support for Miirror, a nonprofit digital platform addressing the urgent gap in accessible support for the 30 million Americans who struggle with eating disorders. Greene’s grant will fund backend development, accessibility certification and an 8- to 12-week campus pilot to assess user engagement and mental health outcomes.
  • Ronan Hussar ’26 (Whitman School) was awarded funding for MacroFlow, which allows users to automate Excel tasks using simple language instead of code. The grant will support secure software development and beta testing with 25 early users.
  • Jacob Kaplan ’28 (School of Information Studies) was awarded funding for The OtherGlasses, the world’s first adaptive eyewear that automatically adjusts to users’ changing vision throughout the day. Grant funds will help build a functional prototype using liquid crystal lenses and develop a companion app for real-time adjustment testing.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the continued support of Syracuse’s entrepreneurship ecosystem and excited to receive this grant as we prepare to launch EXCHKR,” Josefson says. “This funding will help us accelerate development and bring a much-needed financial management solution to student organizations nationwide.”

“Being selected for this award could not have come at a better time,” says Hussar. “The grant will take MacroFlow from an MVP to a market-ready product at a point where every dollar truly matters. Being selected also means that judges believe in my idea. That support motivates me to keep building.”

“Winning the Orange Innovation Fund award is incredibly meaningful,” says Venerus. “It gives us the momentum to finish our MVP and get WingStat market-ready, and it’s validating to know others see the impact and potential in what we’re building.”

“I’m very grateful to receive this award,” says Augliano. “I want to thank Orange Innovation team for recognizing the value that Utopia brings to the beauty industry. With this award, I will be able to build out the infrastructure for our product grading tool.”

“Being selected for the Orange Innovation Award tells me that people believe not only in Miirror, but in the future we’re trying to build, one where access to help is a right, not a luxury,” says Greene. “This grant, and every bit of support, moves us closer to turning something painful into something that gives others access to care and helps them feel less alone, which is all I’ve ever wanted to do.”

The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science professor will address metacognitive artificial intelligence at the Singapore conference in January 2026.

KG Tan Endowed Professor of Artificial Intelligence Paulo Shakarian was as one of 10 speakers to address emerging trends at the  in Singapore from Jan. 20-27, 2026. AAAI is the premier scientific society dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI), advancing the scientific understanding of the mechanisms underlying behavior and their embodiment in machines.

The emerging trends in AI track at the AAAI conference aims to expose the AI community to exciting, under recognized or fast-developing ideas from the various AI subdisciplines, as well as from adjacent disciplines and domains. Talks will summarize new developments and competitions that are likely to shape future AI research agendas.

Shakarian will be discussing metacognitive artificial intelligence and a recent paper titled “Towards Artificial Metacognition.” Metacognitive AI deals with the study of artificial intelligence systems that can self-monitor and/or regulate resources.  The concept has its roots in cognitive psychology studies on human metacognition.  It has led to the understanding of how people monitor, control and communicate their cognitive processes.

“It is an honor to have been selected to present an emerging trend talk at AAAI,” Shakarian says. “I am really grateful to the community of researchers that have coalesced around artificial metacognition over the past two years.  An exciting community has formed consisting of not only computer scientists, but from diverse disciplines including cognitive psychology, systems engineering and aerospace, among others. Developing artificial systems that reason about themselves is, in my view, a key challenge that we must address in order to deliver AI systems that are more resilient and robust.”

Shakarian has written numerous papers on metacognitive AI and has also edited a book on the topic.  He has received several grant awards on the topic from the Army and DARPA, and most recently he has received funding for several high-end Nvidia-based GPU systems that will soon arrive at Syracuse.

Shakarian has also sought to create a , holding several workshops on the topic since 2023.

“Paulo’s innovative work in metacognitive and neuro-symbolic AI represents the next wave of AI research,” Alex Jones, chair of , says. “His recognition by AAAI signifies both his leadership in the field and Syracuse University’s growing role at the forefront of artificial intelligence.”

Alumnus Simon Weiss Creates Niche in Booming Sports Gambling Market

Weiss built a thriving sports betting consulting firm and now mentors Falk College students.

When graduated from the University in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in sport management from the , legalized sports gambling in the United States was limited to two states: Nevada and New Jersey.

But since the 2018 Supreme Court ruling that prevents the federal government from dictating how states manage sports betting, the industry has undergone a rapid and extraordinary expansion. Some form of sports gambling is now legal in 39 states, plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, and the betting market in 2025 is estimated to reach nearly $20 billion in the U.S. and $111 billion globally, according to .

After starting his career in sports sponsorships and then working outside of sports, Weiss put his entrepreneurial spirit and skills to work by creating a company that is now shaping the future of the booming sports gambling industry. Weiss is CEO and founder of (the M.V.P is for Make Vegas Pay), a Fort Lauderdale-based business that provides expert advice and education services for sports bettors.

“A lot of people love sports, and they love betting on games, but they work day jobs and they don’t really have the time to do the research,” Weiss says. “So the idea was for us to be that guiding hand for them.”

As M.V.P continues to grow, Weiss has reconnected with his Syracuse roots. He joined , a network of donors who share a common goal of supporting the University’s highest priorities. Following conversations with Falk College Director of Development , Weiss joined the , a group of the college’s most committed and influential young alumni.

Weiss is also helping to cultivate the next generation of sports betting experts. He’s in his second year of hosting Falk College students who are handling a variety of roles.

Sport analytics major Jared Weber ’26 is interested in a career in sports gambling and says he’s gaining a wealth of industry knowledge.

“My experience at M.V.P has helped me build a deep understanding of how to identify and create advantages over sportsbooks and thereby make myself a valuable candidate for jobs in the future,” Weber says. “I’m incredibly grateful to Simon for giving me the platform to learn so much about the betting space and helping other students learn along the way.”

Sport management major Lindsay Dorman ’27 also wants to work in what has been a male-dominated sports gambling industry. She says Weiss has given her jobs and introduced her to people that have increased her confidence and made her more motivated to work in the field.

“He’s taught me so much about the industry while giving me the freedom to take initiative and grow creatively,” Dorman says. “I’m really grateful for his mentorship and this experience is making me even more motivated to make an impact in this space.”

Sudha Raj Receives Medallion Award for Groundbreaking Contributions

The Falk College professor has spent over 40 years advancing nutrition science through research, teaching and service to the health of communities around the world.

Growing up in India, Sudha Raj’s childhood dream was to become a physician. But there was one problem: She didn’t like the sight of blood.

Thanks to the influence of her parents and a friendly neighbor, Raj discovered a different way to help people by focusing her career on nutrition science and dietetics. She moved to Syracuse in 1981 to enroll at the University, and while she never left Syracuse, she has made an enormous impact around the globe.

In particular, Raj is known worldwide for her studies to investigate dietary acculturation patterns of Asian Indian immigrants in the United States and her various leadership roles with the , the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. Closer to home, she’s an award-winning and researcher in the in the .

Recognizing Raj’s groundbreaking contributions to the field of nutrition and dietetics, the Board of Directors selected Raj as a recipient of the , which was presented at an honors breakfast Oct. 12 during the in Nashville, Tennessee.

“Sudha has an inquiring mind and has mentored thousands of students to carry that quest for inquiry, but also cultivated a culture of integrity, purpose and shared commitment to advancing the profession,” says Harlivleen “Livleen” Gill, who served as the 2024-25 president of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “Beyond her research and education, Dr Raj is known for her warmth, compassion and genuine connection with her colleagues and students.”

Nutrition and Food Studies Associate Professor first met Raj when she joined the University faculty in 1998, and Bruening says Raj is the first faculty member to receive a national award of this stature since the legendary in the early 1990s.

“For her many professional, scholarly and educational accomplishments at the local, national and international level, and for her selfless generosity to making all of us who are privileged to know her better global citizens, I strongly recommend Dr. Sudha Raj for the Medallion Award,” Bruening wrote in her recommendation letter to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Awards Committee.

Nutrition and Food Studies Associate Professor Lynn Brann joined the Syracuse faculty in 2003 and says Raj has brought her expertise in multiple areas to the department through new course development and her dedicated mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.

“Seeing Sudha receive this award brings me joy,” Brann says. “Sudha has been thoughtful and deliberate to select areas of nutrition that are meaningful to her and that impact the population at large. I am inspired to follow her pursuit of advancing the profession.”

For her part, Raj says she was excited to receive the Medallion Award and mingle with the five other award recipients from around the country. But she sees the honor as a “team effort” because of the support she has received from her colleagues over the years.

“In the nutrition department we have the best colleagues to work with,” Raj says, “and a lot of things happened here (at Syracuse) through the Academy’s initiatives because my colleagues saw value in it.”

Fueling Innovation, Revitalizing Spaces, Building Tech Skills

Through Syracuse STEAM Engines, local high school students and artists are reimagining neglected spaces as vibrant public places and developing workforce skills for Central New York’s tech-driven future.

Like many American Rust Belt cities, Syracuse is addressing the challenge of vacant lots and neglected properties—transforming these spaces into opportunities for renewal and growth as the city evolves beyond its manufacturing heritage.

Research from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development highlights how vacant properties can strain municipal resources and affect community health and safety. But in Syracuse, unused spaces have the chance to be the site of positive change. In anticipation of a surge in tech industry jobs driven by Micron Technology’s major expansion, Syracuse University is spearheading creative initiatives to revitalize underinvested areas—while cultivating a new generation of innovative thinkers.

Launching these efforts is a new National Endowment for the Arts-funded program called Syracuse STEAM Engines. This two-year creative placemaking initiative will bring together local artists, high school students and city planners to create temporary public artworks that transform neglected spaces into vibrant neighborhood gathering places to be celebrated.

The initiative was conceived, developed and will be led by , interim chair of the  and arts education professor in the .

Rolling explains these efforts are about more than filling empty urban spaces: “Worldwide, communities are learning that creativity is the engine that drives progress. With Syracuse STEAM Engines, we’re showing young people how to tackle real challenges, reimagine public spaces and prepare for careers that might not even exist yet. This is what the future of education should look like,” Rolling says.

The initiative is a collaboration among the City of Syracuse, the Black Artist Collective, the Everson Museum of Art and the Syracuse City School District’s new STEAM High School—the region’s first school dedicated to science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM). The new STEAM High School, which first opened its doors in September, pairs rigorous academics in STEM with a strong emphasis on the arts and design, preparing students for emerging careers while fostering creative problem-solving.

Students Reimagine Their Community, Gain Essential Skills

Syracuse STEAM Engines will assemble four design-build teams consisting of Syracuse STEAM High School students and a visiting artist-in-residence or local artist whose work has explored the intersections of science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Each lead artist is chosen from the Black Artist Collective or the Everson Museum’s roster of local exhibiting artists through a competitive proposal process. Among the selected artists is , the University’s first-ever artist in residence.

Students will take part at every stage—designing, fabricating and installing site-specific works in selected public spaces across the city. Projects could range from simple mechanical sculptures utilizing levers and pulleys to installations that integrate robotics, software, data visualization and interactive light or sound systems. For selected students, the program offers a chance to reimagine their community as well as valuable training in project management and the 4Cs (collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity)—all essential skills for the future workforce.

The initiative aligns with the City of Syracuse’s multi-year “Syracuse Housing Strategy,” which emphasizes “additive new work” that revitalizes neighborhoods without demolition. The city’s Department of Neighborhood and Business Development will help identify installation sites, ensuring the projects respond directly to community needs.

Similar university-driven initiatives that integrate science and public art are already proving effective in other cities. At the , an arts-integrative training program for first-year STEM graduate students has shown that participants develop a greater appreciation for diverse perspectives, stronger community-building and collaboration skills and greater openness to experimentation in their work.

Similarly, the City of Madison and the University of Wisconsin launched , a program that uses public art to inspire STEAM education and careers. The effort has drawn strong community support and successfully connected students and residents with scientific ideas through art.

Syracuse STEAM Engines brings these learning principles to Central New York, giving local students the opportunity to move beyond classroom learning and cultivate real-world skills as they prepare for careers in emerging technologies.

Cramer Family Foundation Professor of Practice in Community Impact Named

As part of the Maxwell School’s Civic and Community Engagement office, Liz Arnold is teaching courses to develop the next generation of civic leaders through applied learning and real-world engagement.

The ‘ recently appointed Cramer Family Foundation Professor of Practice in Community Impact brings a rare combination of community-based civic engagement and expertise in cultivating changemakers across a range of fields.

joined the Maxwell School in August as part of the newly formed Civic and Community Engagement office. She is teaching undergraduates from a range of University degree programs with a focus on experiential learning, leadership development and problem-solving.

This semester, Arnold is teaching a capstone course in which students are tasked with turning their social science research into an action plan in partnership with a local government or community organization. One project focuses on using social media strategies to help nonprofits expand engagement and impact. Another aims to help families facing hardship to keep their pets while relieving pressure on local shelters.

Arnold plans to develop additional courses focusing on public narrative and civic leadership as well as applied social innovation and partnership building.

“These classes provide students with the analytical tools and practical skills needed to identify social problems, develop evidence-based responses and lead effective community engagement efforts through hands-on research and real-world partnerships,” she says. “By connecting rigorous analysis with practical implementation, students develop the civic leadership skills essential for creating lasting change and strengthening democratic institutions.”

The Cramer Family Professor of Practice in Community Impact was established through a generous gift by the Gerald and Daphna Cramer Foundation to provide support to students across a range of community engagement efforts that develop capabilities and skills in entrepreneurship, civic engagement, philanthropy, systems change, social innovation and impact.

The late Gerald B. Cramer earned a degree in accounting from the in 1952 and went on to become one of the Maxwell School’s most generous and dedicated supporters. He and his wife, Daphna, funded professorships and graduate assistantships and supported the creation of the Global Affairs Institute at Maxwell (now the ) as well as the University’s Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism (now the ).

Arnold says her work across fields and sectors has given her a unique lens and ability to connect with and mentor students with wide-ranging interests.

Most recently, she served as director of leadership engagement and impact at the Truman National Security Project, where she developed training programs and oversaw national policy and impact networks. At Google, she led national Ph.D. outreach strategies and helped launch diversity initiatives that continue to shape the company’s talent pipeline.

Her approach at Maxwell also draws on two decades of experience at top academic institutions. At Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management, she redesigned the technology career curriculum, advised MBA students and grew the school’s High Tech Club into its largest professional organization.

At MIT’s School of Engineering, she managed the Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program, helping engineering students integrate professional skills with technical expertise. And, at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Center for Public Leadership, she coordinated interdisciplinary fellowship programs that immersed graduate students in dialogue with influential leaders.

Across roles, Arnold says she has focused on three core principles: applied learning that connects classroom theory with real-world practice, cross-sector relationship-building and leadership development that empowers diverse voices. “Whether I was working with engineering students at Google, MBA candidates at Cornell or community members, the approach has been the same—give people the tools, connections and confidence to create change,” she says.

Pete Buttigieg Driven by ‘Propulsion’—Not ‘Despondency’

The former U.S. secretary of transportation joined Professor Jay Golden for a capacity event that covered environmental issues, leadership, democracy and more.

A turning point in Pete Buttigieg’s public service career came with unrelenting rainfall while he was mayor of South Bend, Indiana. The city of roughly 100,000 experienced flooding that washed out roadways, damaged properties and endangered lives.

Buttigieg activated the city’s emergency operations center and hit the streets to assess the damage. At the urging of a councilmember, he knocked on the door of a woman who needed assistance.

Inside, he saw her family’s possessions floating in the flood water.

“And that was the moment that my mental image of climate change stopped being polar bears and ice shelves,” he said. “I think of political rhetoric around climate change. Not that I don’t care about what happens in the Arctic, but this was happening on the west side of South Bend, Indiana.”

Capacity Crowd at Syracuse

Buttigieg reflected on the flood’s aftermath during a conversation-style event in the National Veterans Resource Center at the Daniel and Gayle D’Aniello Building on Friday, Oct. 3. Part of the Pontarelli Speaker Series—named for its sponsors, alumnus and University Trustee Kenneth A. Pontarelli ’92 and his wife, Tracey—the talk was co-hosted by the and the .

Buttigieg shared the stage with , Pontarelli Professor of Environmental Sustainability and Finance and director of the Syracuse University . Their conversation encompassed environmental issues, leadership, American democracy and more.

In his opening remarks, Maxwell Dean said he was heartened to see so many students in the audience—all tickets for the event were claimed less than 20 minutes after it was announced. “These individuals are passionate about the issues we’re going to discuss today, and they are our future leaders,” said Van Slyke.

Before welcoming Buttigieg to the stage, Whitman’s interim dean, , shared some of his accomplishments. Buttigieg became mayor of South Bend in 2012 at age 29. He was elected for two terms and departed for a 2014 deployment to Afghanistan as a Naval reservist. In 2020, he sought the Democratic nomination for president, winning the Iowa caucuses. As U.S. secretary of transportation from 2021-25, Buttigieg implemented the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act which funded over 70,000 projects.

The Syracuse event occurred three days into a shutdown of the U.S. government. Golden’s first question presented an opportunity for a general assessment: “Where are we today as a nation?”

Facing Unprecedented Challenges

“I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that not since the Civil War has our country faced this level of challenges—certainly not since World War II,” replied Buttigieg. “And so much of it is actually happening not because of an external threat.”

Social media, with its misinformation and algorithms, has distorted perspectives and relationships, he said. At the same time, Buttigieg said, the U.S. is witnessing an unprecedented level of government assertion of control over not only its own branches but also entities that have long remained independent such as academia and even late-night television.

“That makes this an extremely challenging time, but also a particularly important time for universities, because universities exist for the purpose of finding the truth, for the purpose of fostering dialogue and healthy difference and for charting where we are supposed to go next in ways that maybe won’t fully resemble the status quo that we inherited,” said Buttigieg, who later said universities need to fiercely guard their independence.

Several of Golden’s questions focused on the environment. For instance, he wondered what the current administration is trying to accomplish by repealing and diminishing protections. Buttigieg shared his view that much of the transitions have served to benefit certain friends and allies.

“Part of the tragedy of this is there is a healthy conservative critique to be made of environmental policies that are either self-defeating or unreasonable,” added Buttigieg. “And I say that as a strong believer in environmental protection.”

Several students posed questions, some related to climate change and the recent downsizing and dismantling federal departments like USAID.

Donough Lawlor, who is pursuing a master of science in sustainable organizations and policy, asked Buttigieg to comment on the impact of doing away with USAID and the worldview of U.S. leadership.

While he expressed deep concern, Buttigieg pointed out that many entities were formed in the 1940s and 50s “based on the way the world was.”

“Sooner or later, it’s going to be somebody’s job to figure out what to put in there next,” he said. “And that’s actually a huge opportunity to set up development aid in a way that is more responsive to the needs of the people it’s supposed to serve.”

He added, “my main impulse is not despondency, even though it can be depressing to watch, but actually propulsion.”

Looking Forward, Not Back

In South Bend, he said, prior generations often reflected about the economic boomtime prior to the 1963 closure of a main employer, the Studebaker auto plant. His community had a breakthrough in part, he said, because his generation was the first that didn’t experience its automaking heyday. As mayor, he said, all he could consider is “what do we do next?”

A parting message seemed directed toward students.

“If you’re considering participating in civic processes, which I hope you will, don’t underestimate the moral authority that you carry as a young person saying, ‘This decision you’re about to make affects me,’” he said. “The longer you are planning to be here, the more you have at stake, and I think, the more you have to say.”

Dynamic Sustainability Lab Collaborates With Thomson Reuters to Build Expertise and Opportunity

The relationship began as a study of forced labor in global supply chains by Heather Panton, a Thomson Reuters executive and Maxwell graduate student.

Forced labor in global supply chains may decline in coming years as Generation Z—today’s teens and young adults—gain financial influence. Unlike previous generations, they are more willing to pay a premium for products manufactured ethically.

These and other findings are the result of a two-year study by the University’s (DSL) on behalf of Thomson Reuters, a global content and technology company based in Canada.

In addition to revealing data that helps inform industry leaders, policymakers and the public, the collaboration provided valuable research and experiential learning opportunities to numerous University students engaged with the DSL.

It also laid the groundwork for a strategic collaboration that DSL Director Jay Golden says will complement the lab’s endeavors while giving students opportunities to interact with industry thought leaders and examine critical sustainability issues under the mentorship of Thomson Reuters experts.

“Given the impactful and positive experiences our students have had with the forced labor in global supply chain collaboration, we are thrilled to deepen our relationship with Thomson Reuters,” says Golden. “It provides student and faculty researchers within the Dynamic Sustainability Lab greater opportunity to tackle important real-world challenges in companies and governments around the world and come up with innovative, next-generation solutions, models and tools.”

Golden founded the Maxwell-based DSL in 2021 after he joined the school as the inaugural Pontarelli Professor of Environmental Sustainability and Finance. He describes the lab as a cross-disciplinary, nonpartisan think tank that examines the “opportunities, risks and unintended consequences” that arise from the adoption of new technologies, new strategies and growing dependence on foreign-sourced resources and supply chains used in energy, climate and sustainability transitions.

Students engaged with the DSL represent a wide range of programs including many Maxwell majors. They share their data findings in government reports and technical bulletins and at sustainability symposiums the DSL hosts annually in major cities like Boston, New York City and Washington, D.C.

A Student and National Thought Leader

The DSL’s connection with Thomson Reuters began with Maxwell graduate student Heather Panton G’26 when she enrolled in the executive master’s in international relations program in Washington, D.C. Today she is senior advisor for human rights crimes and social impact at Thomson Reuters.

In 2023, Panton was awarded an Eisenhower Fellowship to advance her study of forced labor—a form of human trafficking—in global supply chains. She traveled to Malaysia and Thailand to study best practices and drive public awareness to educate consumers about making ethical purchasing decisions. She received academic guidance from Golden and shared with him a growing interest in the potential impact of up-and-coming consumers.

“When I was abroad, so many people asked about demand from the next generation,” Panton says. “Historically, American baby boomers often prioritized price, without fully considering how cost-cutting would ripple through suppliers and vendors across the supply chain. That has put pressure on companies to reduce costs in ways that sometimes affect workers’ wages and living conditions abroad. We believe Gen Z will play a critical role in shifting that dynamic by asking tougher questions, such as, ‘Was this product made with slave labor?’”

Golden was excited for the opportunity to work with Panton. Her resume included roles with the McCain Institute, the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Department of Justice and the White House. Among them: special advisor for human trafficking and the inaugural human trafficking czar during the first Trump administration.

“She was not only our student but also a thought leader in the country,” says Golden. “I’ve learned a lot—probably more than she’s learned from me.”

Golden brought Panton’s Eisenhower Fellowship research to the DSL, where students spent the next two years expanding her work, studying generational purchasing trends, gathering data and refining her findings.

“They’re such smart students—they’re right on the mark,” she says. “We’ve worked to expand the scope of what they’re thinking about. We want them to be focused and driven, thinking about exposing things that I don’t know that many people are talking about in the mainstream. We want them to be able to present in a way that’s not only academically rigorous but also digestible—something that industry or government can consume right away.”

Presenting Research to Global Industry Leaders

The students produced a by the DSL, and a has been posted on Thomson Reuters’ website. Both share that by 2030, Generation Z will represent 17% of retail spending in the U.S., and 81% of consumers in the age group have changed their purchasing decisions based on brand actions or reputation, with 53% participating in economic boycotts.

While pursuing a bachelor’s degree in policy studies, 2024 Maxwell alumnus Ka’ai I worked as a student researcher with the DSL. He gathered information about forced labor laws across the globe, collected related policies for multi-national corporations and assisted with surveys.

“We basically did a level-set in terms of ‘How do we understand where we are at now, where are we at in terms of forced labor, and how that is affecting the market?’” says I.

The experience was empowering and prepared him for his current work with Deloitte Consulting.

“As a young professional, I’m working on many of the same things I did with the Dynamic Sustainability Lab—data analysis, survey development, stakeholder engagement,” I says. “As I navigate the professional workspace, I feel much more confident and capable going in to a pretty competitive workforce.”

Another outcome of the DSL forced labor collaboration with Thomson Reuters: two events in the 2024-25 academic year at which data findings were presented and expanded upon by subject area experts. The symposia in Washington, D.C., and in Portland, Oregon, drew representatives from footwear and apparel companies as well as government officials.

“Our students helped push the notion, ‘We are your growing customer segment,’” says Golden.  “The leadership from these companies that were in attendance really acknowledged that and were receptive. The work that started with Heather has expanded to where we have the attention of the global footwear and apparel industry. It’s a rare occasion that the type of research finds its way into the mainstream in consumer decisions and draws the attention of international governments and especially the top leadership of global companies.”

Panton says the collaboration with DSL is mutually beneficial.

“The academic rigor is unbeatable,” she says of the research and resulting data. “It’s a great combination of practitioner-meets-academic—we’re taking substantive work and making it very easy for anyone in a C-suite to look at it.”

G’05, G’08, assistant teaching professor in the , a National Science Foundation (NSF) Experiential Learning for Emerging and Novel Technologies (ExLENT) award for quantum and semiconductor upskilling. Hasanovic will develop an education program to give adult learners hands-on preparation for semiconductor, optics and quantum technology careers.

NSF’s ExLENT program is designed to support experiential learning opportunities in emerging technology fields. The program is especially focused on eliminating barriers to STEM education for adult learners by providing training programs that lead to new career pathways.

Professor Hasanovic’s program, Quantum and Semiconductor Upskilling for Career Change through Experiential Education Deployment in Central New York (Q-SUCCEED-CNY), will span six semesters and offer training on specific technologies, interactive demonstrations, industry talks and mentorship. Workshops will take place in the evenings and on weekends to accommodate working adults. Each semester-long cohort program will conclude with a five-day immersive bootcamp covering topics like clean room protocols, semiconductor processes, optical measurements and laser applications.

“This was truly a collaborative effort, and I express my deepest gratitude to all the internal and external partners who contributed to this proposal,” says Hasanovic. “I look forward to working with them—not only on this project, but on future efforts that aim to build a stronger regional tech workforce. By connecting adult learners with emerging technologies and real industry pathways, we’re not just preparing individuals for new careers—we’re investing in the long-term economic strength and innovation potential of Central New York.”

“This award strengthens Syracuse University’s growing leadership in semiconductor and quantum education and research,” says Alex Jones, Klaus Schroder Endowed Professor and the chair of electrical engineering and computer science. “Alongside our increasingly recognized activities in areas such as artificial intelligence and wireless communications, Professor Hasanovic’s program further positions the University at the forefront of innovation in the nation’s most critical technologies.”

Hasanovic has extensive experience in teaching and program development for quantum-enabled technologies, as well as a long career in radio-frequency engineering and design. Q-SUCCEED-CNY builds on the success of EdQuantum, an NSF-funded curriculum Hasanovic created for photonics technicians, and other Syracuse University programs for semiconductor workforce training.

In addition to creating the EdQuantum program, Hasanovic has authored several electrical engineering textbooks and manuals. With both a Ph.D. in electrical engineering and an MBA from Syracuse University, he is uniquely equipped to develop collaborations between industry and academia.

Hasanovic will lead Q-SUCCEED-CNY as Principal Investigator (PI), with support from Jones and Professor Prasanta K. Ghosh as Co-PIs. The program is an interdisciplinary effort, integrating career coaching through the College of Professional Studies, and will also leverage partnerships with Onondaga Community College, the Manufacturers Association of Central New York, Jubilee Homes, Westcott Community Center and other regional businesses and community-based organizations.

Protecting the Grid: Engineering in Action

Amid rising global urgency around digital defense, Syracuse University faculty draw on real-world expertise to prepare the next generation of cybersecurity leaders.

On April 28, 2025, a major power outage affected millions across Spain, Portugal and parts of southern France due to what authorities described as a “.” Although the exact cause was not immediately confirmed, concerns quickly arose about the possibility of a cyberattack. Such trepidation highlights how in today’s interconnected world, something as simple as a phishing email can trigger a chain reaction that jeopardizes the safety and well-being of millions.

Recognizing the exponentially growing importance of cybersecurity, the College of Arts and Sciences’ (A&S’)  (Forensics Institute) offers a  in partnership with the  (iSchool). This program is designed to equip future professionals with the critical skills needed to safeguard sensitive information and infrastructure while holding malicious actors accountable. The M.S. blends courses in digital forensics, cybersecurity and data analytics with advanced forensic science and crime scene investigation.

What Are Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics?

While closely interconnected, these disciplines represent proactive and reactive approaches to managing digital threats. Whereas cybersecurity focuses on preventing attacks and protecting digital infrastructure, digital forensics is concerned with investigating breaches in established cybersecurity and identifying the cause, scope and perpetrators of the attack.

With digital evidence now central to over 90% of criminal cases, as reported in the , the program equips students for careers in cybersecurity, digital investigations and intelligence analysis. They also gain hands-on experience through fieldwork at top-tier facilities, including federal agencies like the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Justice and the Department of Defense, along with various crime laboratories and prosecutor’s offices.

Learning from Leaders in Cybersecurity

A key strength of the program is the access students have to faculty who are actively engaged in cutting-edge, practical research. A prime example is , courtesy research professor and adjunct professor of forensics who also received a master’s degree in forensic science from A&S and a Ph.D. in cybersecurity from the Federal University of Technology Paraná in Brazil. When not teaching courses at Syracuse, he is conducting international research with organizations like the Brazilian Army at the Military Institute of Engineering.

“We focus on developing advanced simulated environments that can replicate everything from energy substations to entire distribution systems,” says Lemos about his current work. “These environments allow us to simulate cyberattacks and study system and device behavior, including the integration of physical equipment.”

Over the past decade, Lemos says the significant rise in attacks on critical infrastructure, such as the  in 2015 and the  in 2021, which significantly affected fuel supply to the U.S. East Coast, emphasize the growing need for highly trained professionals to work in both prevention and incident response.

Ensuring Grid Resilience

Lemos’ work in Brazil involves safeguarding that country’s power supply by exploring how systems react before, during and after an incident—without the risks or costs associated with testing real infrastructure.

“These simulations help uncover vulnerabilities, assess system resilience and evaluate the effectiveness of various detection and defense mechanisms. They also support the development of robust incident response plans and recovery protocols,” Lemos says. In turn, he brings this expertise and a deeper, more practical understanding of how to protect critical systems into the classroom at Syracuse, enriching the learning experience for students.

In his course, Computational Forensics, students are introduced to cutting-edge technologies such as machine learning and artificial intelligence. These tools are vital in the field of cybersecurity to sift through vast amounts of network traffic data to detect unusual patterns. By tackling practical forensic problems, students develop both the technical expertise and an analytical mindset essential for careers in cybersecurity and digital investigations.

Lemos sees sharing the professional knowledge he’s gained as a meaningful way to give back, recognizing the pivotal role his A&S education played in shaping his career.

“My education at Syracuse University was foundational to the work I do today,” he says. “The combination of strong theoretical grounding and hands-on experience—guided by professors who are both researchers and practitioners—gave me the tools to engage with real-world cybersecurity challenges. I’m grateful for the opportunity to support students as they prepare for impactful careers in high-stakes fields like military operations and critical infrastructure systems.”

By combining rigorous academic instruction with applied learning and direct engagement with faculty leading global initiatives, the Forensics Institute equips students to confront today’s complex digital threats. This integrated approach aligns with the University’s and A&S’s priorities of preparing students for careers in emerging and innovative technologies.
