Sport Management Club Raises $76.5K for Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital

The 21st annual auction benefited the Upstate Pediatric and Adolescent Center at the Nappi Wellness Institute.

The in the raised $76,540 for at its 21st Annual Charity Sports Auction. The ceremonial check was presented to Golisano officials Jan. 13 before the Orange men’s basketball game at the JMA Wireless Dome.

During the Syracuse men’s basketball game on Nov. 18, supporters purchased items and placed bids on sports memorabilia, electronics, jewelry, gift baskets, experiences and trips, among other items. In addition to the in-person event, an online auction ran through Nov. 23, allowing supporters to bid on hundreds of items.

Proceeds from this year’s Charity Sports Auction benefited the Upstate Pediatric and Adolescent Center (UPAC) at the . UPAC is a full-service pediatric and adolescent primary care clinic that provides well-child care, adolescent medicine, foster care support through its ENHANCE program, behavioral health integration, immunizations, and other family-centered services to children, adolescents and young adults.

“At Upstate Pediatric and Adolescent Center, we take care of 11,000 patients from 25,000 visits every year,” says UPAC Director Dr. Steven Blatt. “These are children and families like every other family in the community, but often with economic or logistical challenges in their life. We at UPAC have done many things to help them, but the money the students have raised will help with the extras.”

The auction donation will create a Sport Management Club of Syracuse University Endowment in honor of Blatt and is being highlighted by recognition at the playground at , and naming in the UPAC elevator lobby on the fourth floor of the Nappi Wellness Institute.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Falk College Sport Management Club for their extraordinary generosity and commitment to Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital,” says Dave Bartell, assistant vice president of development for The Upstate Foundation. “Through their leadership, dedication and passion for service, these students are making a meaningful difference for the children and families served by the Upstate Pediatric and Adolescent Center, and we are honored to partner with them in this important work.”

The Sport Management Club is a student-run organization. Since its founding in 2004, the club has raised more than $849,000 for local charities.

Previous beneficiaries of the club’s annual charity auction include Boys & Girls Clubs, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of CNY, the Central New York SPCA, Upstate Cancer Center, Special Olympics New York, Food Bank of CNY, the Salvation Army, Rescue Mission Alliance, American Diabetes Association, Make A Wish CNY, Meals on Wheels, the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation, McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Center, Vera House and Tillie’s Touch.

Over the years, the club has contributed more than $125,000 to , a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation. Notable gifts include $20,000 to Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital in 2009–10 and $30,444 to the Upstate Cancer Center in 2011–12.

“Students from the Sport Management Club, for the past 20 years, have done what I think is one of the most important activities you will do, not only in college but in your life, and that’s making efforts to help people in your community,” Blatt says.

2025-26 Holiday and Orange Appreciation Days Information Detailed

Most University offices closed or on reduced hours during holiday break; essential services remain fully operational.

In continuation of the University’s commitment to providing comprehensive benefits and in appreciation of the contributions of faculty and staff, the University will operate under its holiday schedule and Orange Appreciation Days format for the winter break period from 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2025, through Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026. Normal business hours will resume on Monday, Jan. 5, 2026.

In addition to the regular University holidays of Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 and bonus days Dec. 26 and 31, the following days have been designated as paid Orange Appreciation Days: Dec. 29 and 30 and Jan. 2.

Units providing essential services that will remain fully operational during the Winter Break include the Department of Public Safety and Facilities Services.

Services During Orange Appreciation Days/Winter Break

Admissions and Enrollment Processing

The office will be closed for the holidays and Orange Appreciation Days and will reopen on Monday, Jan. 5, 2025, at 8:30 a.m.

Advancement and External Affairs

Advancement Services staff will maintain business hours at the 640 Skytop Office Building Dec. 29, 30 and 31, 2025, to receive and process fundraising gifts.

Building Occupancy

During the Holiday/Orange Appreciation Days period:

Request for Building Access (locking):
If you require your building to be open over the holidays/Orange Appreciation Days period, please submit a request to your building coordinator, noting the specific dates and times. Requests should be made by 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12. (Note that faculty and staff will be able to access the buildings you work in, as usual, by using their SU I.D. cards, even when the buildings are locked.)

Building temperatures will be lowered to 60 degrees unless prior arrangements have been made.

Deans, directors and department heads may submit a detailed request for adjustments to temperature and lighting during the holidays/Orange Appreciation Days period. Please review the University’s temperature guidelines. We ask that requests be made using the Maximo Maintenance system by 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12. Requests will be reviewed and approved by either the vice president and chief facilities officer or the provost.

Important: Buildings Not Included in the Reduced Occupancy Schedule

Bursar’s Office

Campus Bus Shuttle

The campus shuttle service will operate on a reduced schedule until the conclusion of Winter Break. For schedule updates, visit . Campus Store

Disability Benefits and Workers’ Compensation Benefit Payments

Disability benefits checks will be on regular payroll schedule. For those who don’t use the direct deposit option, checks will be mailed to the employee’s home address by the payroll department during the week of Dec. 23. Why might I not receive a paycheck at my home by Wednesday, Dec. 31?

Several reasons could result in you not receiving your paper paycheck on or before Wednesday, Dec. 31. Your permanent address in MySlice has to be correct. For example, if you have moved and did not change your address, the paper paycheck will be delivered to the address per MySlice and either forwarded to your new address (if you have filed a change of address form with the U.S. Postal Service) or it will be returned to Payroll. Either case will result in potentially significant delays in your receipt of your paper paycheck.

What happens if my permanent address is incorrect in MySlice?

Since paper paychecks will be delivered by the U.S. Postal Service, Syracuse University cannot control, track or locate your paycheck once mailed. If you have filed a change of address form with the U.S. Postal Service to forward your mail, delivery of your paycheck will be delayed. If no such form has been filed, the paper paycheck will be returned to Payroll. Either case will result in potentially significant delays in your receipt of your paper paycheck.

  • Indicate that you did not receive your paycheck.
  • Give your name and SU I.D. number.
  • Give the name of the University department that you were expecting pay from.
  • Provide a telephone number where you can be reached.

Messages will be reviewed at various times during the day and calls will be returned as soon as possible.

No special checks will be issued during Winter Break.

With Orange Appreciation Days approaching, the Procurement Department wishes to make you aware that any eProcurement requisition receivedafter Monday, Dec. 8,may not be sent out until after Monday, Jan. 5, 2026. If your purchase requires an RFQ (Request for Quote) to be completed, the requisition should be received byMonday, Dec. 8,to ensure processing it will be completed prior to Winter Break.

All JPMC credit card transactions, for activity through Nov. 30, should be submitted in the My Slice Travel and Expense Center on orbefore 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19.

Student Research Unlocks Protein Interaction Puzzle

Yuming Jiang ’25 turns undergraduate math-based research into a published physics breakthrough that could transform how scientists predict drug-protein interactions.

When Yuming Jiang ’25 came to Syracuse University from Nanjing, China, he was drawn by the school’s vibrant orange color and its poetic Chinese nickname—”Snow City University.” But it was the opportunity to dive into scientific research as an undergraduate that would define his Syracuse experience and launch his career in physics.

Now a first-year Ph.D. student in the College of Arts and Sciences’ , Jiang has achieved what many researchers spend years working toward: publishing groundbreaking research in the prestigious . The fundamental research has broad applicability to biochemical processes, protein analytics and drug development. The remarkable part? He completed this work as an undergraduate, demonstrating how Syracuse empowers students to conduct graduate-level research with genuine real-world implications.

Initially a major in A&S as an undergrad, Jiang’s interest in physics was sparked by an entry level course. He reached out to physics professor and began assisting with computational work and coding on high-energy particle physics research. It also turned his primary interest from mathematics to physics, adding a double major.

Two years later, professor recognized Jiang’s exceptional performance in a thermodynamics course and invited him to join his biophysics research program and collaborate with a theoretical biophysicist, assistant teaching professor .

Throughout summer 2024, Jiang immersed himself in the project—developing theoretical frameworks, creating diagrams and performing complex calculations. The work focused on understanding how proteins interact with cell receptors, a fundamental process that controls countless biological functions.

“As an undergraduate researcher, Yuming did superbly well working on a complex issue involving competitive interactions in modern molecular biology, which can be addressed through theoretical and computational physics,” says Movileanu. “He put in relentless effort to overcome any challenges during this research, and he possesses all the personal qualities necessary to achieve great success as a graduate student as well.”

Solving a Complex Puzzle

Cells rely on proteins to communicate and control what happens both inside and outside their boundaries. At the cell surface, “hub” proteins called receptors act like docking stations, connecting with numerous other proteins called ligands that deliver different signals or trigger various cellular actions.

The challenge? These protein interactions are constantly in flux—attaching, detaching and competing with one another based on concentration levels and binding strength. The goal was to predict how different types of ligands compete for the receptor—for example, which ligand has the advantage, and how that advantage shifts as each ligand’s concentration changes.

Jiang and his collaborators applied an innovative solution: queuing theory, a mathematical approach originally developed to study waiting lines. By modeling how proteins “take turns” binding to receptors, they created a system that can calculate receptor occupancy based on the rate at which each protein binds and unbinds, and its concentration.

Their findings revealed surprising complexity. Even in a simple system with just three proteins competing for the same receptor, changing the amount of one protein dramatically affects how the other two interact—similar to how one person cutting in line changes everyone else’s wait time.

For more complex systems involving many competing proteins, the team developed a simplified “coarse-grained” model that groups similar proteins together, making the calculations more manageable while maintaining accuracy.

By providing a quantitative tool to predict receptor behavior when multiple signaling molecules compete for binding sites, this research could help scientists better understand how cells process complex signals and how disruptions in these interactions might lead to disease. For pharmaceutical development, the ability to predict drug-protein interactions could accelerate development while reducing the need for certain human trials. “We might be able to predict how a drug is acting on a target protein, target cells,” Jiang says. ” I think that’s the most profound implication.”

A Pattern of Excellence

The research publication was not an isolated success. Jiang won the mathematics department’s for promising math majors as a junior and the Erdős Prize for Excellence in Mathematical Problem-Solving for his performance in the Putnam Competition, one of the most prestigious mathematics competitions in the United States. He was also named a 2025 Syracuse University Scholar, the highest undergraduate honor the University bestows.

Jiang’s story illustrates the University’s distinctive approach to undergraduate education—one where students don’t simply learn about science from textbooks, but actively contribute to advancing human knowledge. By connecting talented undergraduates with faculty conducting cutting-edge research, Syracuse creates opportunities for discoveries that resonate beyond campus.

“Working with undergraduates like Yuming is a very rewarding experience,” says Skanata, one of Jiang’s faculty mentors. “It was a joy to see him succeed and I look forward to his future contributions as he taps into the immense potential that he carries within.”

For Jiang, research was an essential component to his undergraduate experience. “Doing research as an undergrad allows you to experience more than your peers,” he says. “Undergraduate research allows you to explore different fields without the intense pressure graduate students face, providing freedom to discover genuine interests and build skills.”

As he continues his Ph.D. studies in physics, building the knowledge foundation needed for theoretical physics, Jiang carries forward the skills and confidence gained through his undergraduate work. “I love the process,” he says. “Being lost in a tough problem and working through solutions in an organized way to find what’s true and what can advance science.”

Project Mend Empowers Justice-Impacted Individuals Through Publishing

The initiative offers storytelling platforms and professional opportunities for justice-impacted communities.

was founded on a powerful premise: self-expression through writing holds transformative potential.

This year, the honored Project Mend with its 2025 Outstanding College-Community Partnership Award, the initiative’s efforts to empower justice-impacted individuals through writing and publishing.

The project, developed by , associate professor of writing and rhetoric in the College of Arts and Sciences, is a multimodal, grassroots-level, open-access national archive centered on the scholarly and creative work of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals and their communities. It is grounded in a digital storytelling and publishing apprenticeship for justice-impacted people, providing practical skills and professional opportunities.

Complementing the effort is “,” a print and digital journal that publishes works by anyone impacted by mass incarceration, amplifying voices that are often marginalized or silenced.

“Both components concern the power of writing to bring about change, exploring how individuals learn to write themselves into new identities and new lives,” Berry says.

The‘s Outstanding College-Community Partnership Award specifically honors initiatives that embody collaboration and reciprocity between universities and communities. The Coalition’s array of programs and member projects help catalyze community-based writing for the public good.

Berry’s work exemplifies the spirit of the award through meaningful partnerships that center the voices of justice-impacted individuals.

David Todd talked about Project Mend’s transformative role at a in the spring.

“Writing is one of the factors that boosted my confidence,” he said during the dialogue facilitated by the . “I was able to express myself, and when I’m able to express myself, people start to listen to me.”

The success of Project Mend has been made possible through partnerships with the Center for Community Alternatives and support from the Humanities New York Post-Incarceration Humanities Partnership, funded by the Mellon Foundation and the CNY Humanities Corridor.

At the University, Project Mend is supported by the Engaged Humanities Network, CODE^SHIFT (Collaboratory for Data Equity, Social Healing, Inclusive Futures and Transformation), the Humanities Center, the SOURCE, Syracuse University Libraries and the Department of Writing Studies, Rhetoric and Composition. Berry also received an award from the Office of Research’s Good to Great (G2G) Grant Program, designed to help faculty secure major external funding by supporting the revision of promising grant proposals.

The multifaceted support has helped Berry strengthen the initiative as it prepares for its next phase of growth. Its new work includes a series of animated films that highlight selections from the pages of “Mend.” On Thursday, Nov. 13, Wade and animator Evan Bode will premiered “Prison and Time,” adapted from a piece in the 2025 issue of the journal.

In January, Project Mend will also launch “Mend Fences,” a podcast series of recorded conversations inspired by contributions to the journal.

As Project Mend applies for new grants and reconfigures as a comprehensive national archive, it continues to demonstrate how writing can be a powerful tool for transformation. By giving formerly incarcerated individuals and their families platforms to share their narratives, Berry’s initiative creates opportunities for justice-impacted people to reimagine themselves, their communities and their futures.

Alumnus Simon Weiss Creates Niche in Booming Sports Gambling Market

Weiss built a thriving sports betting consulting firm and now mentors Falk College students.

When graduated from the University in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in sport management from the , legalized sports gambling in the United States was limited to two states: Nevada and New Jersey.

But since the 2018 Supreme Court ruling that prevents the federal government from dictating how states manage sports betting, the industry has undergone a rapid and extraordinary expansion. Some form of sports gambling is now legal in 39 states, plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, and the betting market in 2025 is estimated to reach nearly $20 billion in the U.S. and $111 billion globally, according to .

After starting his career in sports sponsorships and then working outside of sports, Weiss put his entrepreneurial spirit and skills to work by creating a company that is now shaping the future of the booming sports gambling industry. Weiss is CEO and founder of (the M.V.P is for Make Vegas Pay), a Fort Lauderdale-based business that provides expert advice and education services for sports bettors.

“A lot of people love sports, and they love betting on games, but they work day jobs and they don’t really have the time to do the research,” Weiss says. “So the idea was for us to be that guiding hand for them.”

As M.V.P continues to grow, Weiss has reconnected with his Syracuse roots. He joined , a network of donors who share a common goal of supporting the University’s highest priorities. Following conversations with Falk College Director of Development , Weiss joined the , a group of the college’s most committed and influential young alumni.

Weiss is also helping to cultivate the next generation of sports betting experts. He’s in his second year of hosting Falk College students who are handling a variety of roles.

Sport analytics major Jared Weber ’26 is interested in a career in sports gambling and says he’s gaining a wealth of industry knowledge.

“My experience at M.V.P has helped me build a deep understanding of how to identify and create advantages over sportsbooksand thereby make myself a valuable candidate for jobs in the future,” Weber says. “I’m incredibly grateful to Simon for giving me the platform to learn so much about the betting space and helping other students learn along the way.”

Sport management major Lindsay Dorman ’27 also wants to work in what has been a male-dominated sports gambling industry. She says Weiss has given her jobs and introduced her to people that have increased her confidence and made her more motivated to work in the field.

“He’s taught me so much about the industry while giving me the freedom to take initiative and grow creatively,” Dorman says. “I’m really grateful for his mentorship and this experience is making me even more motivated to make an impact in this space.”

Research Reveals How Post-9/11 Media Coverage Shaped a Controversial Conviction

Lender Center for Social Justice research examined how media coverage of Yassin Aref's arrest and conviction shaped public understanding in ways that supported prosecution narratives.

was an Iraqi Kurdish refugee and respected imam living in Albany, New York, when as part of a controversial FBI sting operation in 2004. Though critics argued that the government failed to provide evidence of Aref’s guilt, he was before to Iraq.

What role did media coverage play in Aref’s story? That was the focus of a research project sponsored by the and conducted by and five Lender Student Fellows.

Their findings, which will be presented at a symposium, “: The American War On Terror,” on Nov. 7 and Nov. 8, showed how local and regional news coverage shaped public understanding in ways that supported prosecution narratives and made conviction more likely.

The findings are also being showcased as an exhibition on Nov. 8 and Nov. 9 at . That event is sponsored by the Lender Center with support from the New York Humanities Center, Coalition for Civil Freedoms, Muslim Counterpublics Lab and Syracuse Peace Council.

The research team’s comprehensive examination of news coverage around the case found the following themes and patterns.

Over-Reliance on Official Law Enforcement Sources

  • Reporting contained official government narratives and cited law enforcement and government officials more frequently than any other source, an imbalance that presented readers with primarily one perspective on the case.
  • Coverage failed to question the legitimacy of the sting operation via independent experts.
  • Alleged connections to terrorist organizations in news reports were based on weak or unverified evidence.
  • Most media misreported, and then failed to correct, a claim by federal government translators that Aref’s name was found with a Kurdish word meaning “commander” in front of it; the word actually means “brother.”

Uncritical Framing of Sting Operations as a National Security Necessity

  • 60% of articles portrayed terrorism stings as essential to national security and helped normalize controversial law enforcement practices.
  • Coverage celebrated the sting as a counterterrorism success before the trial had concluded.
  • Articles linked the arrest to heightened terror alerts, even when officials said cases were unrelated.

Direct Impact on Public Perception

  • An emphasis on potential terrorist connections influenced how the public viewed Aref’s credibility.
  • News coverage emphasized Aref’s identity as a Muslim more than any other identity he held.
  • Most reporting was incomplete and did not include the voices of his family, community or even his lawyer.

Gauging Fair Reporting

Husain, an assistant professor of magazine, news and digital journalism in the Newhouse School, examines and reports on the ongoing “war on terror,” including the impacts of its news coverage. She believes that newsrooms have the potential to use their resources to assure more accuracy in reporting, and that the public has the ability to assess the reliability of news coverage they see.

“One of the big solutions is to give journalists enough time to properly report a story using objective and investigative methods,” she says. “It’s Journalism 101, but reporters speaking to many and varied sources about a situation is an important step in getting as close to the truth as you can.”

News outlets can also guard against poorly reported stories and assure better accountability to their audiences “by making sure their reporting is driven not by those in power, but by the people who are most affected by the decisions of those in power,” she says.

Journalists can also audit their own systems to make sure their reporting is not harming communities, she says. “When newsroom leadership fails to do this, it falls upon individual journalists to take responsibility. Reporters have always been able to push editors and higher-ups to change coverage or to pursue certain stories.” Husain also cites the resource and its as a tool for news consumers.

Estonia Fulbright Gig Launches Global Entrepreneurial Teaching Tour

Sean Branagan’s global journey began with a 2021 Fulbright Specialist grant to help universities in Estonia create media entrepreneurship programs. He has since spoken to audiences in more than a dozen countries.

As a “serial entrepreneur” and interactive marketer, has applied his across varied careers. More recently, he has worked with global audiences in a dozen countries, sharing his knowledge of the creator economy.

A 1980 graduate of the , Branagan returned to the school in 2011 to found the and teach media innovation courses.

The center runs the , a where students test digital content and media ideas and connect with faculty and media mentors and entrepreneurs. Branagan has also launched student startup competitions, entrepreneurship programs, the interactive series “” and , a seed fund for tech hub startups. He coaches numerous startups and venture funds.

Branagan’s global journey began with a 2021 grant to help universities in Estonia create media entrepreneurship programs. Affiliated with Tallinn University’s Baltic Film and Media School, he spent two months in 2022 conducting workshops, making presentations and immersing himself in the country’s startup scene.

Branagan traveled to the U.K. to brief members of Parliament on the creator economy and existing technologies and their evolution as they considered a bill proposing to ban cell phones in schools.

He returned to Estonia to keynote the 2023 -Net Summit on Media Entrepreneurship. The organization is comprised of European university professionals focused on improving research into and teaching entrepreneurship teaching for the screen media industry.

More speaking requests followed. He has since spoken to journalism students in Belgium, government officials and business leaders from across the African continent in Ethiopia, sports leaders in Ireland, media researchers in Lithuania, corporate communicators in Germany, musicians in Slovakia and policy makers in the United Kingdom.

He has also participated virtually at universities and conferences in India, Nepal and South Africa, and is teaching creative entrepreneurship in a virtual format to 500,000 high schoolers across India, Indonesia and the Middle East. Recently, he traveled to the U.K. to brief members of Parliament on the creator economy and existing technologies as they considered a bill proposing to ban cell phones in schools. In December he (along with Newhouse Professor and other education technology and government leaders) will address hundreds of top students at the at in Coimbatore, India.

We asked Branagan about those experiences, his reaction to questions he receives from media innovators worldwide and how his global work impacts his teaching.

Q:
Did you expect your Fulbright project to launch a global speaking tour?
A:

I didn’t anticipate that, but I am incredibly fortunate that it did. The timing and topic were perfectly aligned. Since then, as word spread, I’ve addressed all types of groups. It has been an amazing experience.

Q:
What is your reaction to the ways media and creative entrepreneurship have taken hold in diverse cultural, geographic and economic settings?
A:

I am most surprised that participants at these events come from all over the world and from nearly all walks of life. The concept resonates with [everyone from] high school students [to]…an Olympic organizing committee in Australia. Many startups and tech companies [want] to leverage the creator economy for growth or new offerings. Others seek insights into its future. Some economies view it as a vital uplift for people to tell their stories and earn a living. In more developed economies, the focus is on building a vibrant creator economy.

Q:
With artificial intelligence (AI) tools, platform shifts and new monetization models, the digital landscape has been upended since 2021. Has your initial “power to the creators” message also evolved?
A:

There are now more tangible examples. Five years ago, I described the potential of creators; now I point to concrete successes like “” [a Latvian animated film] winning an Oscar, over 50% of Grammy winners being independent artists and numerous successful online shows.

People are increasingly interested in discussing technology, especially AI and its impact. While there is concern about job security, I emphasize how this new economy shifts access, control and ownership, empowering creators to develop and own their audience relationships and directly monetize their content.

Q:
Where is the creator economy headed?
A:

My dad used to say that immigrants to America were tailors, butchers, dressmakers, deli owners and dreamers … all looking for opportunity to start something [new]. The creator economy is almost the reverse. It comes to you, wherever you are!

Powered by digital channels with built-in capabilities and access to global markets, anyone can be a creator, develop an audience and generate a living. And startups are smaller, faster, global and making money faster because of AI. Particularly in the media and entertainment sectors, there is a lot happening in this ‘AI economy.’

Q:
How can countries and institutions support the creator economy?
A:

I generally advise them to enact laws that hold media platforms accountable, exactly as Congress’ 1996 enactment of did for television, publishing and media companies here for decades.

The act’s goal was to encourage expansion of the internet by protecting online service providers from being treated as ‘publishers’ of user-generated content. We can now see [its] unintended consequences. With GenAI tools, [countries] also need to understand how these systems work so they can augment copyright and legal rights of individuals … and creators of all kinds.

Q:
How has your international experience shaped your teaching?
A:

It has significantly boosted my credibility and enhanced my ability to explain what my students are already witnessing online. They’ve watched “” and they see the movement. They fluidly follow media and channels and personalities from all over the world without even thinking about it. I help them rethink what they might want to do in their careers and where they might live and work.

Professor Receives Award for Quantum and Semiconductor Workforce Development

G’05, G’08, assistant teaching professor in the , a National Science Foundation (NSF) Experiential Learning for Emerging and Novel Technologies (ExLENT) award for quantum and semiconductor upskilling. Hasanovic will develop an education program to give adult learners hands-on preparation for semiconductor, optics and quantum technology careers.

NSF’s ExLENT program is designed to support experiential learning opportunities in emerging technology fields. The program is especially focused on eliminating barriers to STEM education for adult learners by providing training programs that lead to new career pathways.

Professor Hasanovic’s program, Quantum and Semiconductor Upskilling for Career Change through Experiential Education Deployment in Central New York (Q-SUCCEED-CNY), will span six semesters and offer training on specific technologies, interactive demonstrations, industry talks and mentorship. Workshops will take place in the evenings and on weekends to accommodate working adults. Each semester-long cohort program will conclude with a five-day immersive bootcamp covering topics like clean room protocols, semiconductor processes, optical measurements and laser applications.

“This was truly a collaborative effort, and I express my deepest gratitude to all the internal and external partners who contributed to this proposal,” says Hasanovic. “I look forward to working with them—not only on this project, but on future efforts that aim to build a stronger regional tech workforce. By connecting adult learners with emerging technologies and real industry pathways, we’re not just preparing individuals for new careers—we’re investing in the long-term economic strength and innovation potential of Central New York.”

“This award strengthens Syracuse University’s growing leadership in semiconductor and quantum education and research,” says Alex Jones, Klaus Schroder Endowed Professor and the chair of electrical engineering and computer science. “Alongside our increasingly recognized activities in areas such as artificial intelligence and wireless communications, Professor Hasanovic’s program further positions the University at the forefront of innovation in the nation’s most critical technologies.”

Hasanovic has extensive experience in teaching and program development for quantum-enabled technologies, as well as a long career in radio-frequency engineering and design. Q-SUCCEED-CNY builds on the success of EdQuantum, an NSF-funded curriculum Hasanovic created for photonics technicians, and other Syracuse University programs for semiconductor workforce training.

In addition to creating the EdQuantum program, Hasanovic has authored several electrical engineering textbooks and manuals. With both a Ph.D. in electrical engineering and an MBA from Syracuse University, he is uniquely equipped to develop collaborations between industry and academia.

Hasanovic will lead Q-SUCCEED-CNY as Principal Investigator (PI), with support from Jones and Professor Prasanta K. Ghosh as Co-PIs. The program is an interdisciplinary effort, integrating career coaching through the College of Professional Studies, and will also leverage partnerships with Onondaga Community College, the Manufacturers Association of Central New York, Jubilee Homes, Westcott Community Center and other regional businesses and community-based organizations.

2025 Is a Strong Year for NSF Proposal Funding, Early-Career Faculty Awards

Faculty across five schools and colleges earned major National Science Foundation grants to support cutting-edge research in AI, physics, chemistry and engineering.

National Science Foundation (NSF) funding for Syracuse University faculty research projects totaled $19.7 million in fiscal year 2025, an increase of $5.8 million over last year’s total, according to the .

NSF also recognized four faculty members with prestigious.

Duncan Brown, vice president for research, says expanded NSF funding and the selection of four faculty for CAREER recognition is a testament to the strength, quality and innovativeness of research taking place across campus. “Such positive outcomes show how important it is that our researchers continue to apply for federal grants. Doing so helps assure that continuing projects can maintain their momentum without interruption and that new research ideas have the support they need to realize societal impact,” says Brown.

CAREER Awards

CAREER Awards are NSF’s highest recognition for early-career academic professionals. The awards are designed to help recipients build the foundation for a lifetime of leadership and integration of education and research. Receiving the awards this year are:

Hu works on that are super sensitive to mechanical forces and that can show visible signs, like changing color, when they are deformed or damaged. This helps materials report damage on their own and makes it possible to study how subtle force moves through complex systems, such as synthetic plastics and biological materials. He also designs smart materials that adapt their behavior or properties in response to other triggers, such as ultrasound, light or chemicals.

Kim aims to bridge the information gap between software systems and hardware devices by embedding implicit hints between systems and devices. The research helpsimprove data storage performance and data retrieval reliability while maintaining compatibility. It supports complex, large-scale computing needs of modern businesses and technologies such as artificial intelligence and big-data analytics.

Mansell builds and fine tunes , the tools that detect the tiny ripples in space caused by cosmic events such as black hole mergers. She also works with a special kind of light called “squeezed light” that helps make the detectors more precise.

Zhang uses quantitative methods to study how the interests of citizens and technical experts could shape the. She explores the politics of digital technologies regarding AI governance; the international political economy in the age of advanced automation and quantitative social science methods.

Record Year for NSF Funding

The $19.7 million in awards is the highest amount since 2022, according to Chetna Chianese, senior director in the (ORD). She says the success highlights the faculty’s continued striving for research success regardless of a shifting federal funding landscape.

The NSF funding supports dozens of projects across five schools and colleges in multiple research areas, including:

  • An for doctoral students in emergent intelligence biological and bio-inspired systems for the
  • A cluster of three projects to support the Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy and Astrophysics
  • One new and two renewed Research Experiences for Undergraduates projects
  • A project to further explore new physics at the LHCb experiment at , the European center for nuclear research
  • A training program for upskilling photonics technicians in advanced optics and quantum research-enabled technologies
  • A project to explore the science of social-psychological processes and AI companionship

Support for Proposals

The Office of Research offers broad support for faculty pursuing sponsored funding, including through , departmental research administrators and ORD. Faculty beginning to pursue external funding and resources to support their research and creative activities can start by working with , who bring deep knowledge of external funders and stakeholders to provide strategic consultations.The Office of Research additionally supports faculty through the , which helps them plan, draft and complete their proposals. That program will resume in the spring semester ahead of the summer 2026 deadline.

ORD also provides guidance regarding the ongoing changes to federal funding, the changing federal funding landscape, updates on new executive orders and adjusted administrative policies and regulatory requirements. “We are keeping faculty updated via email and an internal SharePoint, but our team can also provide project-specific guidance to principal investigators who reach out to us,” Chianese says.

Lights, Camera, Imagination! Faculty Help Turn Teens’ Ideas Into Films

Using simple objects such as stones, eggs, paper plates, colored markers and a globe, and employing techniques of light, shadow and motion, a dozen Syracuse area high schoolers are making original short films this summer using their smartphones. “” is a four-week, community-based project designed to empower the teens, give voice to their ideas and bring the skills the faculty mentors teach in their college courses to a wider circle of neighbors.

It’s co-led by , associate professor of film and media arts (FMA) in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA), and G’23, FMA instructor, alongside , adjunct in photography at Onondaga Community College. The trio, whose work is internationally exhibited and renowned, is assisted by several undergraduate and graduate FMA students.

The initiative “is a way to break out of the university bubble a little bit and connect to the neighborhoods around it, creating a new web of connections between neighbors and neighborhoods so that what we do here as artists and teachers can reach more people,” Bode says.

Art + Science

This summer’s theme, “,” explores topics and skills in both art and science. Teens learn about cinematic storytelling, animation, light and shadow, film editing and creative sound design. They hear of astronomer ’s discoveries and Syracuse astronaut trips to space. They study artists’ techniques, view the century-old movie, “,” and enjoyed an enlightening field trip to the University’s to see a telescope made in 1887.

While the project informs Mišo Suchý’s research in filmmaking, a key objective is helping teen artists experience a sense of empowerment by voicing their ideas through images and public presentations, he says. “We have a lot of talented and hardworking youth in this community, and I think they have things to say. Empowering young creatives may be as simple as listening, giving your time and attention and respecting their vision.”

The project is based on the ethos of independent cinema and low-budget filmmaking minus the massive budgets of Hollywood special effects, says Mišo Suchý. “We explore how teens can use accessible filmmaking strategies to craft fantastical stories of adventure and exploration and how can they reach the moon while standing here in Syracuse,” he says. “At first, these questions may seem impossible, but that’s exactly why they require creative thinking to uncover the answers.”

Campus Feel, College Setting

Workshops occur four afternoons a week at . The campus setting helps students imagine a future college path even if they hadn’t considered one before, Lida Suchy says. “We do find that they become more comfortable with the idea of the college campus environment and can see themselves in it much more clearly.”

Participant Laniya Tillie of Nottingham High School says she has a great time making little films. “It makes me feel really good about myself. I get to jump into my creative side and actually make all the things in my head come to life. There are a lot of shows that I find comfort in. I want to create shows that help people have a comfort place.”

Shantell Shallo, a senior at Corcoran High School this fall, joined the project to make new friends after moving here recently from Georgia. “I’m usually doing things alone and I wanted to work with other people in film. [For this] you just look at the stuff you have around you, think of the idea you have and just pick up what you think will work. And if it doesn’t work, you get something else. It’s all just getting, building, thinking.”

An international student who intends to make independent films,Jabbari says her participation has helped boost her understanding of American culture and norms. “Working with teens, you get to know what they like to see and what this generation needs,” she says.

Mišo Suchý says working with the teens informs his filmmaking research. “What I’m trying to do is to make movies from within the community, with the community. There’s this research of collaborating and connecting what we know as filmmakers and when you start to understand the images, you start to think about the representation, you start to think about the stories. My hope is that it is kind of a dialogue.”

Community Outreach

Past projects were projected on the exterior of the with a second showing at with a public-audience question-and-answer session. This year’s films will debut Feb. 7, 2026, at the ArtRage Gallery in Syracuse and be exhibited through March 21 as part of the Syracuse Symposium series.

“I think whenever we show something on a screen, that’s a way of saying that it matters, that it’s worth looking at, says Bode. “And so, I hope that the teens leave with the message that their voices matter, their visions matter. And I think celebrating it on the big screen with their community is a beautiful way of doing that in a way that can be affirming and empowering.”

NSF I-Corps Semiconductor and Microelectronics Free Virtual Course Being Offered

University researchers with groundbreaking ideas in semiconductors, microelectronics or advanced materials are invited to apply for an entrepreneurship-focused hybrid course offered through the National Science Foundation (NSF) Innovation Corps (I-Corps) program.

The free virtual course runs from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, with an opportunity for an in-person immersion experience at SEMICON West, North America’s premier microelectronics conference, in Phoenix, Arizona, Oct. 7-9. Interested individuals can .

Hosted by Syracuse University and the University of Rochester as part of the Interior Northeast I-Corps Hub (IN I-Corps), this NSF-sponsored course is open to faculty, postdocs, Ph.D. and master’s students, undergraduates and community-based startups working on semiconductor-related technologies with commercial potential. Syracuse’s NSF I-Corps program is a partnership between , and.

Teams selected to participate may receive up to $5,000 in travel reimbursement, enabling participants to conduct in-person customer discovery interviews and attend specialized workshops during SEMICON West. Participation in this conference provides unmatched exposure to global industry leaders, cutting-edge technologies and potential collaborators or customers. Conference attendees include executives, engineers, startups and policy leaders shaping the future of chips.

The course provides hands-on entrepreneurship training and one-on-one coaching tailored to researchers working in far-reaching sectors, from advanced lithography and transistor miniaturization to artificial intelligence hardware and high-power materials. The course emphasizes emerging areas critical to the next generation of semiconductor innovation. Applications can range from 3D integrated circuits, system-on-chip integration and computing chips that mimic the human brain’s neural architecture for tasks like pattern recognition, learning and sensory processing. Big data and machine learning innovations are of interest, as well as conventional semiconductor design and manufacturing applications.

The course is of benefit to anyone interested in being part of the research, design, commercialization and supply chain associated with these industries.

As part of the Forever Orange Faculty Excellence Program, the University has committed additional funds to support teaching and research activities in environmental sustainability, finance and public policy.

“Our goal is to build a sustainability program that ties together distinctive strengths from across the University, allowing business, policy and environmental science to work together to solve problems and tackle global challenges,” says Pontarelli. They are well on their way, thanks to previous support from the Pontarellis that a five-year funded professorship in 2019 and a scholarship fund in the , and helped create a unique master of science joint degree from the Maxwell and Whitman schools in sustainable organizations and policy, and the .

“When I (in 2022), Syracuse University was ranked No. 11 nationally for environmental policy and management by U.S. News & World Report,” says Jay Golden, Pontarelli Professor of Environmental Sustainability and Finance. “Each year our rankings have increased, and the most recent 2024 rankings have us tied with Harvard for No. 6. Certainly, our goal is to continue to rise in the rankings through the recognition of our peers of all the great programs we have going on at Maxwell and the other colleges at Syracuse.”

Growing Interest in Sustainability

Pontarelli graduated from the University with a bachelor of science in finance from the Whitman School and in economics from the Maxwell School. He immediately began what became a long career at Goldman Sachs, initially focusing on energy markets. “We made one of the first large-scale investments into renewable power back when few such investments were being made,” says Pontarelli. “As I gained more understanding of the field, I realized how critical private capital is, together with government policy, in addressing environmental issues. The business case for investing in sustainability is incredibly strong.”

In an interview with Private Equity International (November 2023), Pontarelli pointed out that sustainability was just a niche market with $20 billion of assets under management just 10 years ago and ballooned over the decade to more than $270 billion of assets under management.

At Goldman Sachs, where Pontarelli is partner and managing director, he leads the firm’s private equity impact investing efforts within the Asset Management Division. He was appointed to the University’s Board of Trustees in 2021, serves on the Whitman Advisory Council and, last year, was awarded the for Sustainability by Maxwell. His investments in academic and experiential programs are designed to ensure that environmental policy research is well-grounded in an understanding of markets and financial mechanisms.

“This is a pivotal time,” says Pontarelli. “There are so many things that could be done if we don’t get caught up in political issues. Everyone would agree that these are common sense business things to do.” He cites the example of one recent investment in a company that provides control panels to big data centers to manage power generation usage. The product can reduce usage by 10% for the average data center. “I’m focused on pragmatic solutions.”

That’s why Pontarelli is so impressed with the work being done by students in the which, according to Golden, is “a nonpartisan think tank and research lab focused on examining sustainability imperatives at the nexus of industry and government.” The lab launched in 2021 with just six students.

“From that early start we have maintained every semester 40 to 50 paid undergraduate and graduate sustainability research fellows spanning almost every college across the University,” Golden says. “In fact, we have more students interested than we can currently financially support or mentor with our current staffing levels. Not a week goes by that I don’t receive numerous emails from students interested in joining the lab.”

Inspiring More Philanthropic Support

It’s easy to see why students are so interested. They are doing what Pontarelli calls “eye-popping work” in partnership with industry or government, and he hopes to inspire more philanthropic support so that more students can participate. Golden cites a few examples:

  • Students from the Maxwell School, Whitman School and are doing research in energy systems, biotechnologies and carbon capture technologies for various industrial sectors. This includes providing technical, finance and policy insights to develop recommendations for government agencies, policymakers and business leaders that would benefit the U.S. economy and the environment.
  • Students are working with Thomson Reuters as well as the global footwear and apparel industries researching innovative best management practices and policies that can eliminate the utilization of forced labor in the global supply chain.
  • A team led by Golden and School of Architecture Assistant Professor Nina Wilson is working with architects, engineers, design/build firms, insurance, government and finance on developing innovative strategies, policies and professional practices for resiliency in the built environment.They are holding workshops throughout New York state.
  • Students have developed an energy dashboard to quantify and visualize energy consumption on campus, by buildings and by energy source, that is continuously updated while also modeling economic impacts and opportunities for the University to manage energy consumption and other environmental impacts. This also involves working with Campus Dining to quantify food wastes across the campus and modeling the economic and greenhouse gas opportunities by implementing new strategies.

Preparing Future Leaders for the Public Good

The new joint master’s degree from Maxwell and Whitman, supported by the Pontarellis and directed by Golden, offers an intensive professional sustainability consulting course each spring through the lab, in which students work in project teams to provide high-level research and consulting to public and private organizations, including Fortune 500 global companies and smaller start-ups domestically and globally.

“I am grateful to Ken and Tracey for continuing to promote the values of high-quality teaching, experiential learning, evidence-based research, engaged citizenship and public service impact, which we hold dear at the Maxwell School,” says Dean David M. Van Slyke. “This professorship, endowed in their name, will make certain their commitment to climate, energy and environmental sustainability and working across levels of government and sectors of the economy continues to be a hallmark of the instruction and scholarship the Maxwell School pursues in preparing future leaders that seek to promote the public good.”

Golden says that “we have an incredible job placement rate for students even before they graduate” with organizations as diverse as Morgan Stanley, KPMG, the State of New York and the Department of Defense. “They stand out in the job market because they have learned to take theory from the classroom and apply it in the real world, with plenty of opportunities to do the work thanks to Ken and Tracey Pontarelli,” Golden says.

“We want students to get excited about careers in the sustainability field,” Pontarelli says. “It’s purposeful, meaningful work as they become problem-solvers who can change the world.”

Mark Lodato Reappointed to 5-Year Term as Dean of the Newhouse School

Interim Vice Chancellor, Provost and Chief Academic Officer has announced the reappointment of as dean of the for a five-year term. The reappointment follows a comprehensive review process that included feedback from key stakeholders, including Newhouse faculty, staff and advisory board members.

“Dean Lodato took the helm of an already strong school and managed to make it even stronger,” Provost Agnew says. “His energetic and collaborative leadership and his emphasis on innovation, industry partnerships and an exemplary student experience have marked his five years as dean and led to many wins for Newhouse.”

Lodato became dean in July 2020, and his tenure has been marked by dynamic forward motion, expansion and success in several key areas for the school.

He was one of the driving forces behind the establishment of the (IDJC) in Washington, D.C., to create new knowledge, foster a more informed and engaged citizenry and better equip students for success in media, communications, policy, governance and citizenship. He also established the undergraduate program, which dovetails with the work of IDJC and further strengthens Newhouse’s robust study away offerings, which also include and .

Under Lodato’s leadership, the school , making a Newhouse education more accessible to new populations and serving as a model for other Syracuse schools and colleges looking to expand online undergraduate education.

Lodato also spearheaded the creation and renovation of several learning spaces at the school. These include the , which provides co-working and co-location space to media and tech startups who want to work with talented Newhouse students, and the new , a hub for undergraduate and graduate students interested in a career in sports communications.

He has increased investment in research and creative activity, which has resulted in more than $7.3 million in sponsored research funding, and articulated the goal of strengthening the connection between communications and technology, particularly through .

Early in his time at Newhouse, Lodato implemented salary equity across Newhouse professional and support staff and faculty. He also has overseen a 17% growth in the faculty, representing a more diverse population.

“Working with the stellar faculty and staff of the Newhouse School has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and it has been my honor and privilege to serve as dean for the past five years,” Lodato says. “I am excited to continue our work together as we expand and realize our shared vision for the future of the school as a place that provides students with the best possible education and training for careers in communications. And I know that collective work is what makes Newhouse the top communications school in the country!”

Lodato joined the Newhouse School after more than 14 years at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, where he served as associate dean and associate general manager at Arizona PBS. He previously spent 16 years as an award-winning television reporter and anchor for network affiliate television stations in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Phoenix and Fort Myers, Florida.

Professor Heather Lavender Discusses STEM Ed and Building a High-Tech Workforce

As Central New York gears up as an advanced manufacturing hub, local and state government, development organizations, educators, unions and tech companies are collaborating on plans to educate and train a workforce capable of making these industrial investments a long-term success.

The employment requirements for alone are 9,000 people over 20 years. The company observes it chose the Syracuse area “partly because of the region’s ‘access to talent.’”

Among area initiatives designed to prepare this talent are the , which includes Syracuse University; the University’s Center for Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing; Empire State Development’s (ON-RAMP); the , developed by teachers unions, Micron and New York State; and Syracuse City School District’s .

One scholar deeply invested in how a high tech workforce is trained and how STEM subjects are taught in schools—especially to students from marginalized groups—is , who joined the School of Education in August 2024 as assistant professor of inclusive STEM education.

A microbiologist, Lavender moved from the laboratory to the classroom to explore and improve how children receive science education. Here, Lavender weighs in on discrimination, resourcing schools, how marginalized groups foster innovation, and teaching teachers about equitable STEM education.

Tell us a more about your journey from microbiology to teaching to becoming a professor who researches equitable STEM education.

When I was a researcher among doctoral students who were women and women of color, I saw the abuse they endured. Throughout those years, I watched the tears and held their hair when they were sick due to a demoralizing experience.

I began to think, I could mentor better, and not just to women. I could offer equity of mentorship … Then at some point I thought, there is a space where you could reach even more people, further down the chain of education—influence how children learn.

I have always said, when it comes to education, I’m “girl crazy!” As a black female who worked in STEM, I’m all in for girls of color. That’s not to say I am not into helping others, but it’s a juggling act.

How do you address equitable STEM education among pre-service teachers?

Recently, I had my elementary education students read “” … from “Rethinking Schools.”

In the essay, a teacher tells of one of her first graders—Allison—who dresses in clothes more typical of a boy and who wants to be called Allie. She is obviously uncomfortable in class. The teacher writes about her journey to make Allie feel like she belongs.

“I realized,” writes the teacher over again as she strives to make all her children feel comfortable with their choices and thus be more accepting of Allie. These lessons including having the class think about the toys they play with: are Legos only for little boys? What if a boy feels like playing with a doll?

Children’s activities with toys leads to STEM activity that is marketed and labeled by gender. My research shows that if a girl is prevented from playing with a toys labeled for boys, that girl can be hindered from following a path toward STEM.

“When you say nothing, you say something,” I tell my students. There are times when the nothing you say is louder.

Current criticisms of DEIA initiatives in education might suggest that equity in STEM fields has been achieved—is that really true?

During the Super Bowl in 2022, a addressing women and STEM careers. PSAs are for matters of public urgency. They run for free, and this is the most expensive airtime of the year. Tell me, if more women choosing STEM was a matter of public urgency in 2022, do we think that urgency has dissipated?

The marginalization of women and women of color in STEM is still urgent. It’s important for pre-service teachers to know this. I want them to have been in an education class in which it is important to discuss these matters.

Women, women of color and individuals within marginalized communities have uniquely different challenges. When they bring these challenges, they bring additional solutions. That is innovation, and it helps to fuel innovation.

What is the biggest barrier to marginalized children taking up STEM learning and careers?

Resources. That includes the science and technology resources inside of schools, as well as the social capital that comes with neighborhoods and families.

I have seen this barrier in my teaching career. When I worked with visually impaired students, I found their lack of access was similar to that of girls and women. It’s not that these students didn’t want to be in STEM, they didn’t have access to the resources that would help them. You want to make sure these students can do experiments, but even converting a book into braille is a lot of work.

My research shows that children of color and of lower socio-economic status are not funneled into advanced math and science courses. It’s not that those students are uninterested; they are not funneled toward those resources. My research aims to shed light on these inequities.

What is your advice for companies looking to develop the high-tech workforce in Central New York?

I have heard that we should look at these things from the company’s perspective, which is to think about the return on investment.

But if you are a company that is only interested in workforce development for high school students, you are not entirely helping. By the time kids get to high school, they may have made up their mind to do STEM, so you might be looking just to convert a kid from chemistry to technology.

You have got to look at the kid who wants to do neither at that age. Look at the kid who is getting straight Ds or the kid who wants to drop out. Those are the students a tech firm needs to capture, but you are fighting a significantly harder battle to capture their interest.

Manufacturers need to step back and question the length of return on their investment. They should continue to attract high schoolers, but don’t just fertilize the plant already grown, fertilize the seed in elementary school.

They need to find a team of collaborators to help them grow the workforce. They need to invest in resources and people already here. We have local nonprofits and researchers at Syracuse University that are working with younger populations. These individuals are all trying to cultivate elementary aged kids into STEM, but they might not know each other.

Imagine the impact on Central New York if we all came together.
